Suggestions for weekend road trip in September

I'm thinking about taking my gf on a road trip for a weekend in September. I know that Cape Cod would be great in the summer, but not so great in September as most of the festivities come to an end just around Labor Day. Is that indeed true?

Other options would be a trip to Maine or maybe Maryland for blue crabs?

I'm basically looking for good food and some relaxation. A beach area wouldn't be so bad either.

Any suggestions or advice?
