Hi Guys

First, a brief intro about a system that served me well over a decade on 4 Ghz overclock non stop. Pls bear with me.

In 2009, I built my first ever computer with i7 920 (d0 stepping) processor with Asus P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard. Got 12 gig ram back then, basic graphic card (as I initially used the system only for chess software), overclocked it to 4 Ghz. Over a period of time, I upgraded to liquid cooling and added graphic cards. The system was working till yesterday morning and suddenly it wouldn't turn on. Did independent PSU test which was a success. When the 8pin ATX connectors are removed system turns on. Computer guy has informed me today that the motherboard is beyond repair and is dead.

Do not know much about technology, except wanting to have the latest. After building the system 10 years back, I forgot everything about computers and never kept watch on the developments.

BUILD -

For Games
(not a pro gamer)
Budget of $1000
Country INDIA
Suggest parts
, can locate in India on Amazon.
Not sure if AMD can deliver what Intel delivered, but back then AMD was still evolving.
About 4-5 months back bought Liquid Cooling for 1366 lga, not sure if that can support latest motherboards, need to check it's manual. MONITOR, GPU 1050 ti, KEYBOARD AND MOUSE CAN BE USED.
With a possibility of overclocking, yes!
Building within a month
Have genuine Windows 7 Ultimate, which I recently upgraded to Windows 10 pro for free (Can this be used on the new system, dumb question)

I suggest that you take a look at pc part picker. You will get more replies once you have something put together. AMD is a top contender now, so I would recommend building a computer around a Ryzen 5 3600 cpu if you can.
Post back if you have any questions.

Liquid cooling - nzxt kraken x62 - 12000
Ryzen 5 3600 - processor - 16199
ASUS am4 tuf gaming x570 plus - motherboard - 24650
Corsair Vengeance lpx 2 x 8gb - ram - 7992
WD Ssd - c drive - 500 Gb - 7700
WD 1 tb internal HDD (2) - 6900
Nzxt h510 case - cabinet - 6445
Corsair psu rm 650 - 9940
(Msi txt 1650 128 bit - graphics - 15949)

This comes to $1426. The price indicated at the end of each item is the Indian currency value. Is there a way to restrict the budget to$1000 by altering few? I will drop out graphics as I got 1500ti oc.I think the computer guy broke my liquid cooling saying it’s already broken for which I will screw him.

You will have to search for the case and PSU manually on Amazon because PCPP didn't recognize the listings there.

Thank you guys, may be building in less than a week. I feel bad for losing my rig after a decade. It worked so awesome until some short on motherboard

yea but not getting water cooling and getting a Noctua cooler which will be 95% the same performance, also drop the MB down to a B450 MB for the same performance.

I'm curious, what made you think that HE screwed it up? Does it have some sort of funky mounting system, and he didn't torque it down right? Or did he drop it? They do wear out, you know, they have moving parts.

Edit: If you want real logevity from a cooler, go air cooling, and go with Arctic / Arctic Cooling fans, or Noctua, they last a long time, but the actual heatsink should last quite a long time. Although, heatpipes can leak molecules of their coolant, slowly, over time, and become ineffective as well.

LC AIOs, can have pumps wear out, or get clogged, or whatnot.

I'm running a CoolerMaster AIO WC kit myself on this rig, and I'll have to come to a decision in a few years, whether I want to pro-actively replace it (probably) in 3 or 5 years, or run it till it dies (and then it may leak).

When I sent the system for checkup, he said motherboard could not be repaired. He said another engineer will be looking it up. Then called me to inform my WD SSD is broken and does not have OS in it (i was running win 10 till then lol), and further added the gas in the fan mounted on the cpu leaked. When I received the PC, I noticed something missing on the liquid cooling, the wiring was not like before. Some screws on the motherboard are also missing. I repeatedly get the message "CPU over voltage" at start up. When it finally powers on, Real Temp at stock are 35c. I am now unable to overclock at all. I tried that setting and since then received CPU Over voltage. I set all the bios settings to default, still get the same error.

Wow yeah that sounds like absolutely terrible service.

Luckily a Ryzen 3600 will represent a nice overall upgrade, and with a 1050ti through about a GTX 1080/2070, you will be GPU limited all the way.

Do not worry about overclocking the Ryzen, Zen 2 is superbly tuned for stock clocks to be ideal. Also avoid watercooling for this build, it's simply not necessary. Something at or better than a CM 212+ Evo / 212 RGB is more than enough to run a 3600 at happy chilly temps well short of throttling even in fairly high ambients. The 3600 even responds well to modest undervolts, should you be so inclined.

Mobo wise, B450 is more than fine, it's a shame the supply lines and release order got a bit busted, we should have seen more B550 by now. X570 is also an option, but I wouldn't spend big on that, the onboard fans (not interchangeable between various x570 models, a particularly crappy non standardization elemen) represent a pointless potential failure in a system someone might run for 5-10 years.

I've been working on PCs for the better part of 4 decades now, and have never met a sub-60mm fan that is truly robust enough to last the long haul. The little bastards inevitably buy the farm or at the very least start to grind, wobble, slow down, etc as the years wear on.

Ram, 3200 speed is fine, DON'T forget to use Ryzen memory calculator and manually tune timings as best you can. It represents a bigger gain than any OC short of phase change with regards to Ryzen performance. Proper ram tuning is that important on Ryzen.

Good luck, the leap will be ENORMOUS in QOL and I/O especially. Ordinarily I like to help people fix what they have, but I think a CPU that served you for a decade or so in OC role, complete with a suffering under what sounds like probably incompetent techs, deserves to rest in that silicon heaven with the magic smoke and to join with it's ancestors in the afterlife, lol. It's done enough.

Good morning Arkaign and everyone else,

It's been over a year that I initially made my post to rebuild my system afresh. May be my first gen i7 920 didn't take my decision on a positive note and the world entered the COVID-19 phase. India right now is in a disastrous state concerning the 2nd string of virus hitting badly, especially the capital is in chaos and the medical system in on the verge of collapse.

An update about my system is even though a bit messed by the HW Engineer, I managed to overclock it to 3.8 Ghz with 1050ti graphics card and 12 GB ram. I built this PC after seeking help online from gaming enthusiasts like you and it served me well and is still serving me well for the past 12 years. THIS IS A FIGHTER HERE, lol.

That is why I want to stick to the Intel Processor once again which will take me to another decade of better gaming in my 50s.

If my budget is $1500 and I choose the processor, what will be the ideal other components that supplement a better stock performance:

Processor - Intel® Core™ i7-9700K Processor (12M Cache, up to 4.90 GHz)

Motherboard - Asus board which supports i7 9700k for future overclocking

Graphics Card - Anything that is better than my present GTX 1050ti OC (if 1080 is good)

RAM - G. Skill Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 * 8GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL16-19-19-39 1.35V

SSD - 500 GB Samsung or WD

HDD - 1 TB each of Seagate of WD

DISPLAY - 144hz refresh rate monitor

OS - Windows 10 pro 64 bit

Power Supply - 750w Corsair or whatever

Monitor - https://www.amazon.in/MSI-Optix-G27CQ4-DisplayPort-FreeSync/dp/B08J3ML83K/ref=sr_1_35?crid=XM0P4GEP2J5S&dchild=1&keywords=2560+x+1440+monitor+144hz&qid=1620094957&sprefix=2560,aps,290&sr=8-35

Cooling - Have no idea what to do here as temps sky rocket here in India during summer.

Thank you all and I am sorry for not being able to do the research. Whenever I hit up search, I come across several Indian posts that deal with budget friendly posts and not much information about how every component in a set up supplements each other for a better overall performance.

If the cost of the build is gonna cross $1500, I think i would be comfortable with whatever compromises I need to make with the i7 processor and the motherboard. I am not sure if AMD chips can be as reliable as Intel that can see you through a decade.

In the alternative, if 1500 isn't gonna get me a good i7 pc, I would go by any of the suggestions.

Wishing every one a healthy 2021

Hi everyone

It's almost two years that i started this discussion. Pandemic really took toll on humanity. Started this discussion with i7 9th gen and now we have 12th gen already in the markets.

For gaming and music recordings:

i7 12700k or i7 11700k
Asus Tuf Gaming Z690 Plus or Asus Rog Stri Z590-E
GSkill 3600 RipJaws 2x16 GB
WD 1TB NVMe 4th gen SSD
WD 1TB 7200rpm HDD
Cooler Master v850 Gold SMPS
Cooler Master cabinet TD 500 mesh
Asus Tuf Gaming 27" 144hz display
Cooler Master ML360R liquid cooling
Razer ornata v2 keyboard
Razer viper mini mouse.

The 11th gen will cost me a bit less.
Would really appreciate if anyone can suggest about the configuration.
Regards

I should think it would be better to go from an i7 to an i5 than to go from 12th gen to 11th if money is an issue. A huge jump was made between 11th and 12th gen.

BTW I still have a functioning Lynnfield system. It is my most reliable system, never a bother.

My i7 920 is still doing good, except i get bluescreen when i overclocking. Thinking to change SMPS and check it once.

Video cards have been selling for more than double their MSRP. A $500 RTX 3070 for example has been about $1300. Even older models have been selling for well over list price.

Just recently prices have started to come down but a 3000 series at list price is still a unicorn.
