Can anyone recommend a good free wiki host for technical information that allows moderation to be used for spam protection and page tags for searching.

You might want to try www.webhostingtalk.com

A standard shared account with cPanel will allow you to install a Wiki with Softaculous.

I would recommend http://www.freewebhostingtalk.com which caters specifically to free hosting.

A few budget hosts to consider are:
http://www.madgenius.com/web-hosting.php is run by a fellow AnandTech member and offers 30% off discount for AT'ers.

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1614401 is a solid reliable and established web host.

You can get paid hosting that is pretty cheap now days. I imagine free hosting is going to inject TONS of ads into your site. I remember hosting sites on free hosts like Tripod and Geocities myself but the ads were pretty bad, can just imagine how bad it is now.

A decent host is not going to limit what you can/can't install as long as it has basics like php/mysql so you should be able to install something like MediaWiki and set it up how you like. Been wanting to play with that myself actually as it could make a good personal local tool for documenting stuff.

What member hosts this? I tried three browsers and I can't seem to chose a VPS option other than what is shown; the first atom. Also, clicking Buy now doesn't do anything but scroll to the top of the page. Just curious on his VPS prices. They seem very reasonable.

Red Squirrel is correct, ViviTheMage runs it and has hosted several AT'ers non-critical sites. At one time he offered a 30% off coupon which may still work but this was 5.5 years ago:

His VPS offerings aren't working for me either. I'm guessing it hasn't gone live or he's stopping accepting new VPS clients.

Here are some budget friendly VPS suggestions:
DigitalOcean.com would be my first choice and remember to search for coupons https://www.retailmenot.com/view/digitalocean.com

WHT and LEB have numerous deals:

If you're looking for a fully managed premium VPS, look no further than KnownHost

Worth checking OVH too, sometimes they have deals on dedicated servers that are too good to pass up, even if all you need is a VPS. They also do have VPSes.

My online server is hosted through "So You Start" which I think is basically the "discount" line of OVH.

Waaaay too expensive. It looks like $50/month.

Yeah, our VPS slider got wonky with a new update to browsers, trying to resolve it.

If you want some hosting, hit us up, I had a plan for $15 per year for low key sites if you are interested, just PM me or email support@madgenius.com.

There really aren't any good free hosts, they either inject ads, or go paid in a few months, or lose your data, haha.
