my picture archive is growing larger and larger and I've been reading a lot about the new 1TB drives dying.

Any suggestions on what's the best free automatic backup software, preferably ones that does a backup to a ext. drive as well as burn onto dvds.

I used SyncBack a while ago and it was super easy to setup and very reliable when backing up to my external drive. Don't know if it will burn to DVD's automatically though.

If you're on Mac then SuperDuper! or you can use the OS's Timemachine (newest Leopard OS).

are there any restrictions to sync back, reading the reviews, it seems like the free version does not let you pick what subdirectories to backup, it's a all or nothing kinda of choice?

You can pick which subdirectories. It's actually fairly feature packed to be free. There is also an option to back up to FTP if you have a network ready drive.
