I'm wondering if anyone knows of external hard drives --eSATA preferably-- that spin down when not in use? I found this Fantom drive (and a TB equivalent) that accomplish it, and I guess it would be fine, but just wondering if there are alternatives. Some googling led me back to Fantom, so I'm wondering if they're one of the "early adopters" of this.... or maybe I missed others by filtering on eSATA?
If there's an enclosure that accomplishes the same via firmware or something, so that I can use any drive, that would actually be preferable. I scanned through the enclosures on Newegg but didn't notice any.
My current backup for my family media (pictures/home movie rips) suffers from a single "if the house burns down I lose everything" point of failure. The archive plan is to use high-quality Taiyo DVD's and distribute them to multiple family members, but the reality is that I am often 3 or more months' behind on doing the DVD burns -- quite a while when our kids are 2 and 3 years old. I'm looking to set my wife and her sister up with 2 identical external hard drives, which they will swap every weekend when they see each other. There will be 2 directories on the root of the drives, and scheduled weekly backups will put each family's files in their respective directories. If either house gets hit by a meteor the other always has a current backup. Archiving will still be to DVD.
Since it's just a weekly file-copy, the drive will be infrequently used. I'd love to have a 7200 RPM drive for tranfer speed when I need it, but don't want a noisy fan and all the waste heat.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
