My Dad goes to Canada fishing regularly and also goes out to Colorado & Wyoming speed goat hunting every year. He also runs quite a few trap lines around IL.

A handheld GPS unit seems like it would be a nice little gadget to help him mark locations and also find his way if he gets off track (especially on the giant lakes in Canada).

I am a GPS n00b and know nothing of the various brands/models. Any suggestions in the $200-$250 range would be great, especially ones aimed at outdoors'y activities.

We LOVE our Garmin c320 auto GPS. I'm glad I chose it over the i5 which stores all the maps internally and lacks a touchscreen.

I just got This for only $90 for geocaching. PM me in a week or so and I'll let you know what I think of it, though lots of geocaching forums recommend this model and its cheap.

Speedgoat = antelope.

I'm checking some prices and that Garmin eTrex Legend bundle for $170 at Dick's seems like a really good deal.

I'll probably grab it since it's heavily discounted this week. If something better comes along I can always return it.

Considerably more than I'm interested in spending. Looks to be $350'ish.

Yup. Great unit (I've got the 60csx) that I use for everything - mountain biking, car navigation, etc. - but pricier than your range.

That etrex legend may do the job. It doesn't have much by way of streets, and doesn't do car nav, but then he doesn't need streets as he'd be in the wilderness. It'll show where he's gone, help him not get lost, show some trails (not nearly all trails), etc.

Just be aware of that unit's limitations and whether it'll do what you want it to.

the etrex legend is a good unit.. i love it. You can try going for the next higher model which is the vista i tihnk. Its got an onboard compass which is handy when you cant get a GPS signal.
