Suggestions for bulk sale of old ICs

Friend bought a house and the previous owner left storage shelves with old IC's. I "assume" they work. It's been 6 months since I've seen the shelving but they're probably 75 bins. I doubt he nor I are going to part them out on ebay. So I was hoping there was a place that would just buy the whole lot. Or is it even worth the trouble?

Thanks.

As someone who is actively trying to expand his component selection on the cheap by buying component kits and organizers, I’m definitely interested. You could say that I’m at the early stages of building an electronics lab, but I’m not the level of enthusiast who’s able to recognize these kinds of components by the part numbers. I’d know a 7805 voltage regulator or a 555 timer or a 4021 shift register/encoder, but not any of that stuff. In fact, I doubt that I’d ever be able to make use of most of it, since what I can find by searching the datasheet is definitely over my head... like the 64bit FIFO disc/tape controller memory buffer, and NAND gates, etc.

I can’t seem to find data sheets for half of those that I’ve checked but there’s probably something really useful hiding in there. I’ve got no clue what it’s worth and I probably wouldn’t be able to afford it right now anyway... just buying components as-needed except for kits of resistors, capacitors, LEDs, etc.

If you don’t find any takers, I’ll definitely offer some small amount for it but I really don’t know what it’s worth or if I’ll be able to use it (well, the organizers could be handy!).

I would definitely try to sell them, may actually be some nice gems in there that are hard to get now. Probably try to sell the whole lot on an electronics forum or something if no one here takes it. Try EEVblog.

The issue is trying to ship that though. Those are well organized you don't really want to undo all that work.

I'd be surprised if anyone wanted those, you can get newer parts for anything useful in there for pretty cheap anyway.

Fess up...one of your "clients" used those as collateral for a sweet loan...now you're trying to get back your $5.

depending on age, they maybe worth some money. Especially if they are old USA made chips.

craigslist or ebay the lot, or FS/FT forum for the lot ... maybe will make a hobbiest's day with a setup like that.

i'd take a few minutes and type out all the part numbers, gently dump them into a few antistatic bags, and list them for something like $15 + shipping. those seem to be leaded packages and they'll be fine to take some abuse in a padded box.

$15 isn't worth my time to be honest. If buying and selling is your business then $15 adds to the bottom line but otherwise, it's a decent amount of hassle for not much payoff IMO.

Come up with a price that's worth it to you, including shipping, and sell the lot on eBay. I think the saddest thing about tossing them out is that someone, somewhere may need something you have. It's getting tougher to source IC chips now that Radio Shacks are shutting down everywhere. You have to get them through Mouser and MCM...

My dad probably has all the chips you've got there, plus a bunch of tubes. I have no idea what I'm going to do with them when I inherit them.

Going to call a friend that works at Warner Robbins too. He gets to make repairs on some of the aging Air Force aircraft. A lot of times, work gets put in the corner until they can find a part or work around. But I need to get the list together 1st.

I don't understand any of this nerd language, which means that I am actually going to be less helpful than I had originally planned to be when clicking this thread.
