Hi All,

I have a question  I have a friend with a Windows XP (Dell 3000) and a Fujitsu(Laptop) New Celeron M 1.6 both with Windows XP. The Fujitsu has a built in Wireless G card and there is also 1 older desktop (OLD)PIII 450 that was upgraded to Win XP. My friend would like to share his dial up internet connection with His OLD pc and the Laptop through a wired or wireless network setup. In addition he has printers connected to the DELL and OLD pc that he would like to be able to print to from his LAPTOP when it is at home. So this is my question. What is the best networking solution to share his dial up and printer connections between these 3 systems?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I truly appreciate it.

C

BTW: I've setup a broadband wireless network before but never one that shared a dial up connection:

Setup ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) on the box with the modem which will share things out to the router (I believe you need to disable DHCP on the router).

Thanks,
I think I can set that up. Are you thinking a wired router or a wireless router?

Thanks,
Glenn

Wireless is fine, disable DHCP on the router, as ICS will handle DHCP for the connection

Hi Jack,

Just for clarification, I would disable the Dell Internal Modem and go ahead and hook a serial port external modem directly into the router, if I can't find the Best 56Net locally, correct? Also are their any Wireless Routers that have a serial port connection that I could bypass the need for a wired router/switch all together?

(I explained the options to my friend and let him know that Wireless was a little more expensive and he wanted to go with the Wireless option for ease of use with the laptop.)

Thanks,
C

There is few old 802.11b Routers that you might find on eBay. (like SMC 7004WBR).

I am not sure that there is any of the newer 802.11g Wireless Routers.

However if you find the Best Data, for an additional $20 you can find a 802.11g Wireless Router on sale and connect it to the Best Data as an Access point.
