I'm looking to build a new computer for a friend who is interested in video editing / moderate gaming. For the "core" components, here is what I am thinking of so far.

T-bird 1.3+ (no overclocking)
Epox 8k7a+
512 megs Crucial DDR
Asus GF3 w/ VIVO
Firewire Card
Win2k Pro

I generally like to stick with Intel chips / chipsets, but now that there are decent boards using an AMD chipset, I thought I'd give AMD a try. Also, 512 megs of RDRAM would be prohibitively expensive.

I'm not really sure what to do about storage. The budget for this computer is ~ $3000. I am considering an 18 gig Atlas 10K II boot / program drive, striped IBM 30 gig 60GXP's for temp video space, and a single 80+ gig IDE drive for storage. How does that sound?

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

For the video capture card, consider the Canopus DVStorm. For the budget, that should allow you a new, fast system and the video capture card, which you can find online for around $1500. Check out Video Guys.

Thanks for the reply. I should have asked for suggestions on the video subsystem too! What is your opinion on the Matrox RT2500?

From comments and reviews read, and not from personal experience and use, is that the Matrox is known to be unstable with frequent crashes. This is mainly with the older RT2000, which came with the G400 video card. The new RT2500 package does not come with the G400 and is the updated board. Check out Matrox's forum (sorry, no link) and the forums over at Canopus. I haven't kept tabs on RT2500 comments and user reviews, but the above locations should have some.
