Suggestions for a PIII 650 S1 heatsink/fan?

OK ,I have a Soyo 6BA+III m/brd ,the 650 is a cBo stepping so I'm looking to overclock it to at least 800 Mhz area ,more if it will go there.
The case is a midi tower ,1 inlet fan,1 exhaust fan(by cpu),PSU fan exhausting ,twin fan HDD cooler-drawing in.

I've looked at the Global win VOS32+ & its too big ,I looked at the VNS04 but I think that's a bit on the small side.Anything in between?

The Alpha P3125S M60 looks about right but is just too expensive.
The Golden Orb looks kind of weedy ,but I don't really know how it performs (any links for a test would be appriecated:)).
I dont want to lose more than 1 RAM slot BTW.

Any other hsf I've missed? other makes?

Also I'm in the UK so shipping from the US would obviously cost more.

Don't eat dinner for the next week and buy the Alpha. :D I really have no idea other than the Alpha though.

I have the boxed p3 650, running at 140x6.5(910Mhz) on an asus p3bf using the retail Intel heatsink. It is running stable for at least 2 months now since the first day of installation and no overheating. So if you have the retail box, just use it. Otherwise the Globalwin 32 is not bad for the money.Good luck !!!!

Looks like that golden orb for slot one might be the ticket...
But I'd just try whatever you got laying around, and see how it works.

I had an Alpha P3125 on my Slot1 P3 650, but I could only get up to 910MHz with it. I have a FCPGA 650 with a Hedgehog now.

Thanks for response :)

What cpu temps do you get with your 650 under full load? eg running SETI (preferable C :))
Am I right in saying that the Asus P3B-F uses the thermal diode to measure cpu temps like my Soyo does?
Unfortunatley the VOS 32 is just too big ,its not an option :(

OB
I don't have any hsf for it currentley, darn.

AdamK47 - 3DS

How did the Alpha's cpu temps (full load in C)compare to the std hsf?Was it very loud?
(not that mine is currently very quite! ;) )
BTW only 910MHz!?? ,lol ,I'd be quite happy with that :)

Back to the Alpha again ,hmm I'd really resent paying £38 for a hsf! ,kinda nuts! ;).but it does fit the bill (I'll have to measure space taken though).
Tom has just doen a review on SocketA/370 hsf ,the Orbs didnt do well in temps ,but he didnt test the Golden orb.....

Assimilator1 - I have a GlobalWin VGS08H on my PIII slot 1 (the one in my sig) with Arctic Silver. The dual 6000 RPM fans are pretty quiet and the unit seems to do the job. It only slightly blocks my DIMM slot on my Abit mobo (I just put the stick in another slot).

[EDIT: Here is where I got it from.]

My p3bf has some erroneous error in reporting the internal thermistor temperature inside the cpu so I based my cpu temp on the external thermistor attached on the heat sink. Ambient temp 29 c, heatsink 37 c thus cpu temp should be around 43-45 deg c. The temp measurements are taken after running 3dmark 2000(loop mode) for more than 72 hours. Motherboard monitor version 5 reports cpu temp 42 deg.

Now we're talking :) ,can you give me the exact measurements (in mm)for the heatsink & fans please?.
BTW the Global win site doesn't list that hsf so I can't get the specs from them  ,is it an obsolete model? :(
I see at the inflow site it mentions vents for cache chips ,for the PIII Kat I assume,I know those & the copp are SECC2 ,but are their any fitting problems putting it on a coppermine?
Hmm lets look at the price.

PIII CPU Cooler from Globalwin with Fan Speed 6000 RPM+/-15% Air DElivery 12CFMx2 Noise Level 30 dBa Thermal Resistance 0.65°C/W Vented Heat sink for Cache cooling

VGS08Regular price: $25.00 Sale price: $18.95
USPS Express Mail International Service(2-3days pending on custom) starts at $25.00 (up to 1 lb)

So that would be about $44 ,whats that in £ sterling?

That slot1 650 I bought was an OEM, so it didn't come with any heatsink/fan. I used my modified Alpha P3125 for the 650 in my Asus P3B-F and then later on the Asus P3V4X (modified so that the first DIMM slot is accessable). The P3B-F and the P3V4X read the temp very similarly. With both motherboards the CPU temp would read between 40 degrees C to 45 degrees C with full load with the CPU at 910MHz 1.8V. Thats just in my particular case though. Yours will most likely be different.

<< can you give me the exact measurements (in mm)for the heatsink & fans please?. >>

Yikes!! Luckily I keep the side of my case (Enlight 7237) open, so I got you some measurements as best I could (hope you don't mind cm - less numbers... hee hee)! The unit is 13.5cm L x 5cm W x 3cm H. The 2 fans, as best I could measure while the beasties were spinning, are both 40mm.

<< BTW the Global win site doesn't list that hsf so I can't get the specs from them ,is it an obsolete model? >>

I'm not sure... I've seen others mention it and when I did a search on PIII coolers I stumbled upon it. I did see that model offered somewhere else but I forgot where (this was purchased in August). I think the site also referenced something about the supposed "newer" Global WINs that were black-painted aluminum rather than silver or something. This one is brushed black. The fans themselves do say "Global Win" on them. It could be that Global WIN makes custom HSs for someone else (maybe OEMs) and these are it. It's a nice unit though.... really quiet (not that I don't have a kajillion other fans going in here for other machines... ;)).

<< I see at the inflow site it mentions vents for cache chips ,for the PIII Kat I assume,I know those & the copp are SECC2 ,but are their any fitting problems putting it on a coppermine? >>

Oh absolutely not!!! It fit perfectly!!! My 600E was an OEM model w/o heatsink/fan. What's easy about the cumines as compared to the kats is that the CPU core side of the case is already open so the 4 metal rod connectors of the unit line up and slip through the case perfectly and the clip slides down smoothly to lock the HS unit in place. The unit covers the entire cartridge.

<< So that would be about $44 ,whats that in £ sterling? >>

At current rates (if I'm reading them correctly), it's about 1.44 US dollars to the pound, which would be like £30.55. :)

[EDIT: Oh and temp-wise... I have read alot of Mikewarrior2's stuff about thermistors and such so I'm in the habit of taking BIOS-reported temps with a grain of salt.... But the temps I've read go up to maybe 39C after a load (like SETI) and a "quick" reboot to check them in the BIOS. Since I run Linux on this box, I've scrounged around and even installed some temp monitoring programs, but they are so way off that I don't rely on them. The cumines don't get that hot anyway so temp is generally not a problem, even with OCing - and the Arctic Silver helped. I did stick an old 486 fan on my video card though... ;)]

The 40mm is diameter. The fan unit itself is included in the 3cm height I list (the 3cm = fan unit height + heat sink height in total). It's a pretty "thin" unit... :)

Yes I did thanks :)

I wont be going for the VGS08 after all ,its got a smaller heatsink (though its fans are slightly more powerful) than the VNS04 ,also I'll hopefully be getting a 2nd hand VNS04 from someone at OcUK :).It I'll be around £10.
I was looking for something slightly bigger but their seems to be no inbetween for the Slot 1 :(
