Suggestions for a new graphics card for me

I hate being lazy, but I'm so burned out on researching components for this computer. I mostly play EverQuest and CS. I definitely want to keep it sub-$100 because I already broke my budget on this computer by "upping the ante" on parts. Right now I have a GeForce2 MX400 64MB PCI and I'm not happy with it. Can you blame me? I don't care if it's nVidia or ATi as long as it makes my games look good.
System specs:
Asus A7V8X Deluxe
XP2600+, no OC
Corsair 512 XMS3200C2
WD800JB

Why'd you get the A7V8X over the A7N8X? Anywho, Try to find a GeForce4 Ti4200, should be in your price range and will be overkill for CS, and plenty for EverQuest.

I got the A7V8X w/RAID and firewire for $61 shipped. I couldn't pass the deal up. Also, I was only ever planning on running one 512MB chip, so I don't think the nForce chipset would have been worth the extra $$ I would have paid. Another question, should I bother getting a 128MB or will 64 be plenty for me?

go with the 128, even though it puts you over $100

you'll be able to store more textures in vcRAM...which takes load off your SysRAM.

I've checked my free RAM while running EverQuest and several instances of IE and I have close to 300MB free. 128 seems a bit like overkill to me, but I'll see what everybody has to say.

I have about 3 suggestions for you. If you want better image quality then go with ATI.

You have the ATI 9200 that the prices u asked for, here. Make sure you get the higher clocked version, 275/275. It should have no problem with your games

Next u could go for an ATI 9500/9600 for about 20-50$ more and should be able to deal with HL2 and D3. Plus its DX9. You can find them here, and here.

For the ATI cards i suggest MADE BY ATI or MADE BY SAPPHIRE, either one is good, dont know about the others.

Final suggestion would be the GF4 ti4200, it to is a nice card, but dont know about image quality. My GF3 ti200 is not as good as my 8500dv in image quality! but thats ur call. You can find it here.

Since your picking my board let me tell you the 3200ram is not going to run @ 3200 (400) and even if you get it there it will be decrease perfermance. 333 is the faster on this board which means anything above 333 is taking away speed.

So it looks like the general concensus is GF4 Ti4200. Can anybody comment on the image quality that Goose mentioned? Twista, I have my memory running 333mhz @ 2-2-2-6. I just got DDR400 so I would have space to run tighter timings.

Ti4200. If you don't have a problem with refurbs, check newegg, as they often have 128mb ti4200 refurbs for ~$75

Abit is nice (I'm using one, and it looks about as good as a Radeon 7500 AIW...except for the TV-out).
Leadtek will likely give you the best image quality.
...and you can't go wrong w/ Asus (ooo, dual DVI).

Gaming = Geforce TI 4200 64mb

Non Gaming = ATI Radeon 8500LE or 9100 (you can even find refub Radeon 9500's😀)

I got a VisionTek Ti4400 128MB for $79 shipped. I couldn't pass up the offer because it's cheaper and faster than 128 Ti4200. Plus, VisionTek apparently has a lifetime warranty on their prodcuts. Of course, I haven't looked into anybody's experiences with their RMA, but I think I'll be happy with the card after living with a GF2 MX400 64MB.

yup, ebay. He started it at $55 w/ $70 buy it now. I figured if bidding gets opened on that, it'll go way past $70, so I bought it 2 hours after it was listed.
