I figure it's time to look at a wireless upgrade, been running G for years now and would like faster speeds, mostly for 1080p streaming from my file server. Currently I have a couple DD-WRT routers, a Linksys and a Buffalo that I've been very happy with.

What I'm looking for in a N router:

  • Fast data transfer speeds (this means I need dual band?)
  • DD-WRT/Tomato compatible OR stock firmware that act as a wireless bridge
  • Solid reliability - I shouldn't have to reboot a router
  • Gigabit wired switch (4 ports or so)
  • USB printer and storage support a plus
Anyone have a router with those features they really like? Maybe a combination router + USB wireless adapter they like as well?

I have a belkin N+ router with a 16 MBPS from my ISP, Router costs about $80 on amazon, its been good to me, it has storage support and gigabit ports, but I hear the stock firmware for most people is an issue. plus the best review for any Wireless N router on the market period at Cnet.com in terms of range.

Also Dual Band is not required for fast data transfer speeds,it helps to be on another band to dismiss the interference from your day to day devices like wireless mouse or a cordless phone, etc. but does not affect the speed
