suggestions for a good base system?

A buddy at work is looking at getting a new computer, and after we talked for a while, he seems to be interested in building his own. He has no specific uses - image editing, video editing, gaming, etc. - in mind yet, though he may want to once he gets the system. So what I need suggestions on now is a good, useable base system on which he can expand if he decides too.

I have some ideas in mind, but I haven't really looked at building anything in nearly a year - so I thought I'd ask for some advice, especially on CPUs and main boards. At the moment, I think integrated sound and video will work fine, and I plan on dropping at least 512MB RAM in. I'm not sure of an exact budget, but I know he'd like to stay under $1000.

Here's what I'm working with so far, though I am certainly open to suggestions:

Antec SLK-3000B case
400W Fortron-Source PSU
1GB DDR-400 RAM
NEC 3550 DVD burner
WD 250GB / 7200RPM HDD (may be overkill, but the 250s seem to be the sweet spot price wise)

Antec LifeStyle Sonata II w/ 450watts psu
ASUS A8N-VM CSM Motherboard
AMD Athlon X2 3800+
Corsair VS 2x512mb RAM

Seagate Barracuda 7800.9 120GB
