Suggestions for a Blu-Ray player

Do not get a Samsung Blu-ray player. They are notorious for slow updates and even some new models will not play many blu's that come out until they get around to fixing them.

I recommend a Panasonic over other players hands down. The things are built like tanks and play anything you throw at it. Mine has a constant stream of new blu's to test it with, too. And I never had one not play on it unless it was a defective disc.

You might want an LG one just to enable smart features that are brand specific, too, like activating the player will turn on the TV and set the source automatically.

When did all the new models become tiny? They feel like junk

i kind of agree with this.

i purchased the sony s5100 earlier this year, and while it's a great bluray player, it sure does feel like a cheap piece of plastic. it's very light and the plastic on it just feels thin and cheap. i also dont' like that it isn't flat on top and has a stupid design. i believe it is identical in size/shape as the s3100.

all that said, it's a great bluray player, and i couldn't be happier with it. i don't look at it or anything since it's in my a/v closet, so the looks don't bother me at this point. i only stopped using it over my ps3 because my ps3 can't send the hd sound + 3d video signal at the same time. if the xbox1 and/or ps4 can do that, which i'm assuming they can since they aren't even out and it's pretty standard now, then i will be getting rid of my stand alone simply because i won't need the spot on my rack and on my avr inputs.

EDIT:

actually they are different form factors. i actually think the s3100 looks better because it's symmetrical.

Electronics are made to be disposable now-a-days.

If you want the best look into Oppo BDP-103 I think. It's about $400 now, the 105 model is almost 3x the price. You many have to trash it in a few years as technology moves faster.

These are nice heavy chassis.

I just went with a BDP-S590 by Sony. Works nice. It's small and light, but well-made. Plays fast. EDIT: I paid $95 for it new. At the near $300 they are selling for now, just go OPPO BDP-103

I still have a really nice and heavy pro VHS on my rack. I am thinking about pulling it out as it's always has it's clock blinking (newer gear had more residual power to handle short power glitches).

What's the budget?

I just use my PS3.

I couldn't stand the fan noise even when I stood it on edge which caused the fans to run on low.

Funny I never even noticed the fan when playing games.

Another issue is that the PS3 uses a RF signal so no chance to program my logitech remote which is IR only.

There are RF to IR convertors.
