Suggestions/Comments for my PC specs

I'm planning to assemble a PC with the following specs. It was recommended to me by a friend of mine. I'd like to get comments, suggestions, etc. about the specs, combinations, etc.

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (2.20GHz 333MHz FSB Thoroughbred-B core)
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MoBo
512 MB DDR RAM (which brand is the best ?)
Samsung 80 GB HDD 7200 RPM
LiteOn LTC48161H Combo drive (48x24x48x 16xDVD)
Philips 107T 17" Monitor

Thanks in advance.

1. Your processor is a higher class model which would serve you well. However I would find a Athlon XP 2100+ Throughbred-B and then clock it to the same speed but with a 400Mhz FSB (11x200). Most can do this on stock voltage and some might need a little bump.
2. Solid choice on motherboard here, moving on...
3. 512MB is a good starting quantity unless you plan on playing a game like Star Wars: Galaxies or Planetside because I have heard that those can very happily use 1GB of memory. If you are going to go with the processor solution stated above I would get at least PC3200 memory so that you can run sync with the FSB. There are many good brands, of which some are; Kingston HyperX, Corsair XMS, OCZ or Crucial.
4. I have not had a Samsung HDD but have heard good things so I would say this is fine.
5. Combo Drives are cool...
6. Perhaps an LCD? The Viewsonic VP171b more specifically if you plan to play games or want no ghosting.

Thats it, hope it helps! 🙂

I'd suggest getting a 19" CRT. No point getting a serious box if the monitor's small; and monitors are fairly cheap these days. Check out the Sony monitors... very nice. Bear in mind that you'll be able to use your monitor for your next computer, so you're looking at a very long lifespan compared to the rest of the components you're getting.

rest of the gear you've selected is good. I've always used crucial memory because it's always served me well, but most manufacturers are good anyway.

I agree with this statement except on the basis of an LCD. That's why you always buy a excellent monitor (easy on your eyes is important for me). That's why I spent $500 on my LCD! Keep in mind LCDs also are rated at twice the lifespan of a CRT.

thanks for the replies. I haven't mentioned about the graphics card as I was assuming that the Mobo (http://www.asus.com/products/mb/socketa/a7n8x-d/overview.htm) has good enough graphics stuff integrated in it. I'm not a game freak, though I do play games like NFS, etc., sometimes. So do you think that the MoBo will be enough for graphics support or will I need an additional Graphics card ?

I would like to have reviews about this product:
iSound 5.1 Home Theater Headset (http://www.enteriworld.com/brand.asp?brand=iSound&ProductName=iSound 5.1 Home Theater Headphone)
