SUGGESTIONS? Cheap Value Motherboard w/ onboard video < $100

intrigue

I'm looking to build a good budget system that will be used for basic internet/word processing/multimedia/etc. Either AMD or Intel is fine (advice on what is better bang for the buck in my situation?), looking at something in the 1ghz-2ghz range. I have some 256MB Kingston PC2100 DDR ValueRAM lying around so plan to stick that in this system.

Any suggestions for a good stable motherboard with onboard video to match my criteria? Would like to keep motherboard cost under $100. Also does anyone have a suggestion on which processor and speed would be the best value in the 1ghz-2ghz range?

If possible, keeping the total price of motherboard + processor around $150.

Thanks

Asus A7N266-VM would be a good choice, they're very stable with Win2000 or WinXP and perform pretty well, although they're not the Hot New Thing by any means. More info here. We use Win2000 on the ones at work and 256Mb of memory is just about right.

The A7N266-VM is a good board, BUT you can get a nForce2 board with GF4mx onboard now for $100.

Like.....

Soltek SL-75MRN-L for $99
Chaintech 7NIF2-SUMMIT $98

And add a Athlon 1700+ for $50 (retail chip with heatsink is $61)

So there is a board and chip for around $150. Prices are from newegg.com and include shipping.

If you go with this route, it would be a great excuse to add another 256Mb module as well, which will really boost the gaming performance of the onboard video of an nForce2 (plus it will have that much more RAM for multitasking the rest of the time). 🙂

If you're very budget restrained, you could go with an ECS K7SOM+ with pre-mounted CPU. These go for just below $100, and include everything - graphics, sound, LAN, processor, fan and heatsink. The CPU is a Duron-950, soldered to the board.
The same board is available with standard CPU socket as well. Takes DDR or SDR RAM.
