Looking for a 14 inch i5 laptop with 256ssd 8gb ram (1080p a plus). The closest I've found is the leveno flex 2 for around $650 (with 128gb ssd).

Most of the other models seem to be aruond 1000 (the xps 13 (2015) seems to be pretty darn good and there is the yoga 2 for a few dollars less (these are 13 inch).

Any suggestions for high quality 'bargin' that I might have missed ?

The best way to have "bargain" and "SSD" together would be to buy separately. I still see major manufacturers charging way to much for even the tiniest SSD on the spec sheet.

So find the model you like, get a SSD that fits your needs (I like Crucial and Samsung, but there are other good ones out there), do a little work on your end, and you will end up with something very nice for the money.

Yep, unfortunately they are still gouging the heck out of the consumer with SSD prices. I really wish that would stop. You can find i5 notebooks for under $400, but you'll just have to upgrade the drive yourself.

Echo what Ketchup79 says. I would go a step further. Buy the laptop with the cheapest HDD available, and then buy a separate SSD. Clone the HDD to the SSD and then put the HDD away and you'll have a ready to use "factory setup" with no strings attached.

I'd agree with corkyg. If you're willing to do a little work, you can often save some decent $

I think the XPS 13 looks like a great machine, and if you're OK using a standard touchpad, that's probably going to be hard to beat.

If you need to go very "bargain" I just bought a used thinkpad T420s (2nd gen i5) with no hdd on Ebay. I threw the SSD in from my previous machine, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB media drive. Total out-of-pocket cost = $250. If you upped the budget a bit you could probably find something you'd be happy with, too. For example, I've seen last-gen thinkpads (with haswell) with 1080p screens for about $500 recently with an existing warranty because they're so new. (Sorry if I seem to push the thinkpads, but they're the only ones with which I'm familiar.)

Any specific model ? The biggest pain is restoring windows to the new drive (though some laptops don't have easy access bays). I thought all the xps 13 came with ssd and were already around $1000 ?

I'm really a linux guy so in windows what is the easiest way to clone the hard disk (I suppose I should just google the answer).

It would be helpful if you could mention specific models that are easy to upgrade - ones that you've actually used (I can read specs but the nusiance in keyboard/touchpad/durability and screen quality require personal use.

An SSD is the same physical size as a laptop hard drive, and almost all are accessible from the bottom, so no issues there.

All SSDs will come with cloning software. The easiest way for me was to plug the old drive and the new drive into my desktop and run the cloning software from there. Keep in mind you will need a couple extra SATA cables for this, as most drives don't come with one.

If you don't have a desktop, you will need to buy an enclosure, such as this one:

Then it's just a matter of running the same software on the laptop with the drive/enclosure plugged into the laptop.
