Instead of a view button, why not just load the image to the right of the drop-down menu when someone clicks on an avatar choice from the menu? That way "view" isn't necessary as an extra step if someone wants to see what one particular avatar looks like.
Angry face is clicked: angry face appears to the right
Duke is clicked: angry face disappears and duke appears in it's place
Candycane is clicked: duke disappears and candycane appears in it's place
Yes/No?
