I'll give it a try but my last few experiences with European films have not been good, and definitely not Amelie. "Science of Sleep" was mediocre and I hated "Antonia's Line".

"The Lives of Others" is a great movie.

I also recently saw "Summer in Berlin" and enjoyed that too.

You might want to check out the rest of Jeunet's well known films - the man's a genius. (Delicatessen, Alien 4, City of Lost Children...)

Other than that, I wouldn't even know where to start to talk about good French films...probably Jean Renoir and Jean-Pierre Melville. (and obviously, Truffaut)

I found Amelie unwatchable. Walked out of the theater. Sounds like I shouldn't watch Avenue Montaigne.

Delicatessen, on the other hand, is one of my all time favorite movies. Weird.

Edit: typo.

I can't seem to find this movie at blockbuster.com, so I probably won't be watching it.

And yes, I enjoyed Amelie immensely.

I also agree with an above poster that Science of Sleep was trash. Not sure why it got so many film festival selections...

Thanks for the suggestion. I really liked Amelie for how strange it was, is Avenue Montaigne similar in that regard?

Speaking of good French films: Diva:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Amelie was ok but nowhere near as great as everyone wants to pretend it was. And this coming from someone who likes weird French films and dark-haired light-skinned girls.

It just really didn't have much to say. To be sure, it did a great job of acting like it did, and it was cute, but there really wasn't much there.

If you like coherent plot and don't want to watch a movie that is more or less a tour of circus freaks just for the sake of being weird, I strongly suggest you avoid City of Lost Children.

I'm looking forward to Jeunet's Life of Pi. Could be an interesting treatment.

Never heard of this film... looks suspiciously lame, but I'm always up for a new netflix queue item.

Amelie is one of my all-time favorite movies. I might give this a watch.

I agree with OP on the Lives of Others as well. Great movie if you can find a theater that shows it.

Very cute and likable. I think most people would enjoy the film.
