I was a bit surprised when I looked at recent reviews for 2 TB drives (nearly all of them are somewhat negative esp for longevity). I'm looking for a drive (it can be slow) for storing a large amount of multi-media data.

I did not check reviews across all drives but mostly the 'green' drives from wd, hatachi and seagate (samsung drives seem a bit scarce; though the few places iwth f4 had generally negative comments).

My primary concern is long term reliability (the data can be recovered; but the purpose of the purchase is to save time/effort so what's the point in spending $100 or $150 if I will have to turn around in 8 months and do it again).

The most reliable drive is the one that you regularly backup onto another drive. :p

Consumers simply do not have access to the right data to be able to say which models are most reliable. And the plural of anecdote isn't data.

Oops; you're right I goofed. Wish there was an easy way to move posts.

Was kind of wondering if anyone had done a large survey on commercial drives. I know google surveyed over 100,000 drives but I can't find the results of their evaluations.

might have better luck posting your question here http://forums.anandtech.com/forumdisplay.php?f=47 that said i would recommend a western digital black 2TB. i have one and have had 0 problems with it

I haven't heard of any particular reliability troubles with 2Tb drives in particular. The Hitachi 7K2000 has worked perfectly fine here, with nearly 20,000 hours on the first ones I bought (5-platter drives as well!).

I don't see how one can go terribly wrong buying the Hitachi 7K3000. They've been out for a year now. I'd personally avoid the WD Blacks.

I had a Samsung 2TB drive fail on me recently, RMAd it through Seagate and just got replacement back last week.
