suggestion for reducing neffing

I think that displaying the post count right next to a users name in a post encourages neffing. IMO, the post count should only be viewable from the profile page. If you remove the post count from the main post you are making the important statement that post counts aren't all that important. Now, I also think it would be awesome if we could pick our own titles. The whole junior/senior/gold member thing encourages neffing. Some titles could still be reserved, such as 'elite member' and 'den mother'. Well, thats all I have to say.

Conterversial

(PS: I'm a reformed neffer, so I know what I'm talking about 😉)

Wow, brilliant! I wonder why no one has thought of that before. 😉

There's no way to combat neffing, it's just here...

unfortunately I have seen what I ultimately created 🙁 (well, helped along anyways)

No, don't hide the postcount. It's a good way to tell if the person is really who they claim they are. If you're reading quickly, and you see someone who's name looks very similar to a familiar person, but they only have 4 posts, and the real person has 10,000 posts, you instantly know. Removing the postcount will not help much with NEFfing anyway.

i dont think this is effective as you think it will be. I've posted on other forums before that only show post counts in profiles, and one that didnt show post counts at all... And i can promise you that neffing was just as rampant as ever. Instead of posting to increase post count.. people just posted for the sake of posting.. to be popular or have a name that was more reconizable i guess.

One thing to think about, though. Many people here are considerate for whatever reason (FS/FT? curiosity?) of postcount. I check every other day or so to see where I'm at. If it's removed, it will require pulling down the entire "Today" page or the whole profile.

90K + members and that will add up faster than you'd realize. If Anand is hurting for bandwidth, leaving them where they are is a better idea.

lol. Don't blame yourself mate. I don't think people followed your example or anything 😉

This sort of thing goes on in pretty much EVERY large forum on the internet. Except of course us at Anandtech are the only ones who call it neffing...

There are certain members (no names, but I'm sure they know who they are), who seem to pop up in the majority of threads with one word answers like 'cool' or 'lol', which just seems pretty pointless. I think one word replies should be banned!!! 😀

what does the term "nef" mean?

If memory serves me, 'nef' was a member here about two years ago. His stay was short lived, but the one thread for which he shall always be remembered is the thread that spawned the term 'nef'. It was just a thread he started with the title 'Testing, please ignore'. He followed it with about four or five replies in that same thread - all of which stated the same 'testing please ignore' phrase.

So former Anandtech member Endymoin (who incidentally had a rather saucy girlfriend - but that's besides the point 😀) picked up on it, and started calling someone who spammed or posted pointless replies a 'NEF'. And so it came to pass, that the word 'NEF' shall forever be synonymous with spamming here on Anandtech!

Seems to me the best way to discourage posting you don't like would be for you to concentrate more on posting high quality content yourself and less time worrying about what others are doing.

That is an excellent piece of advice. I think I'll start with myself, and try to make my posts worthwhile. Which means that I shouldn't be posting this to begin with. 😉
