Hi all,

I am buying a laptop and was wondering if there is much of a performance diff between a 740 and a 760. If there aint much performance difference between them, I would prefer to get the 740 and use the saved money to get discrete graphics. Is this a sensible idea?

Also, how does the turion compare with a 740 or a 760. I dont have much idea about their line up. any comments on celeron M?

I need a portable say 14", 768 mb of ram(if integrated video) or 512 (if discrete video) , 60 gig hdd. i dont want a brand recommendation..this is just for info....

also how much performance gain are we expecting moving from ddr to ddr2 in the intel side of things? i dont intend to upgrade once i get this......is the additional money for ddr2 worth? fyi, i am in india, and ddr2 in portables is still quite expensive compared to ddr.

any inputs appreciated..thanks a lot.....

The 740 is about 13% slower than the 760 in pure clock, which translates to around 8-10% in real-world performance. DDR2 would be quite helpful, since I think that CPU find itself somewhat bandwidth limited with DDR333 (which is what you'd get). Turion performs about the same as the Pentium M clock for clock, though I think the Turion is a better overall performer. The problem with Turion is finding a laptop with decent video...

I don;t know how much you care about video speed, and I'm not sure the model, but the Compaq 2410US Turion laptop I got for my son for $750 AR screams, and he loves it. He doens;t game on it, so I am not sure the speed of the video card.

i was trying to hold out for the DC Turions, but it looks like the Yonah may win this round. may be just heresay, but there is no projected date for the DC turions that i know of, and the yonah's will be much more widely availible.

Thank you all...But I really cant wait for the DC yonah...It will take much more time to get here and will be crazy expensive. And I am not sure if a DC is a good idea for a portable anyway.

As said, clock for clok the turion and PM have in general the same performance with some important advantage of Turion in intensive FPU performance. You can find MSI and HP compaq Turion laptops with x700 graphics very good for the price. Get the Turion MT series they offer even better battery life than any similar configured PM.
