Suggestion for a quiet & good cooling fan adapter and fan combination?

I'm currently using Vantec AeroFlow VA4-C7040 (socket A w/ Athlon XP 1800+). The fan is pretty loud (good thing is that it doesn't whine) when it's running, so I'm looking for another fan that provides the same or better cooling but quieter. The current TMD fan has a rating of 35.5 CFM at 38 dB(A) at 70mm.

Do fan adapters work well? To which fan size and which fan should I get to achieve a quieter combination? I prefer a fan that has RPM monitoring (for protection with MBM), but any will do.

you should look into a 92mm fan adaptor. i think 92mm fans have greatest benefits (high cfm, low dB)

Any recommendation for a 92mm fan (high CFM, low noise, and low voltage enough to use on mobo fan headers)? I'm also looking for a 120mm for my case's front vent.

I don't think there are 92 to 70mm adapters. I recommend 80 to 70 adapter - won't generate as much back pressure as the larger step adapters do.

Any of the following should do fine, but I'm not sure that the Aerocool fans are 3-wire. You must have a speed sensing fan for CPU fan. The listings are from svc.com and they are one of the few places that carry the 70-80 adapters as well.

80x25mm Panaflo 12L 24CFM 3-pin Fan w/RPM Signal (Same as L1A)
Price: $6.99
Availability: Yes

80x25mm 32.5CFM / 28.3dB SVC Ball Bearing 3-pin use with Zalman fan mate or other speed control.
Regular price: $4.99
Sale price: $1.49
Availability: Yes

Aerocool X-Static Fan -- 22.9CFM -- 21.8dBA
Price: $8.99

Aerocool X-Flow Variable Speed Fan -- 22.9~41.1 CFM -- 80x25 mm
Price: $13.99

Thanks for the suggestion, but a few Zepper listed have pretty low CFM. Will it be enough for Athlon XP 1800+. My temperature right now w/ the default TMD fan is about 33C at idle and around 38C if I'm running something intensive (such as SETI).

Those fans should be fine. If you're really anal about your temps, buy something that pushes a bit more like the Panaflo M1A or the Vantec Stealth.

Load temps of 38C are nothing. My chips have all idled in the upper 40s, low 50s and have all been stable.

Get the variable Aerocool fan then and adjust it to wherever you feel comfortable. After all, everything is a trade-off, you want it quiet, then settle for a bit higher temps. Mine generally run in the mid 40s range. I think that anything below 50 is just ducky.
