Was wondering if anyone had mentioned this. I would personally like to have a counter on my posts so I can see how many people visit my posts.

I know anandtech is having serious bandwith issues. They have grown fast since I first came here.

Would any of you use a counter? Would it be helpful at all? What steps need to be taken to get it done?

Also.. Who do we talk to about offering bandwith and webspace for anandtech?

<< Ahh. I should have searched better for it. If they allowed HTML we could use the free ones on the web..... >>

Have you ever been to a busy site running a counter like that? The page pauses to load that stupid counter, and it slows it down. No way.

Good idea tho, just not here.

Sure I have. Fat w*llet has view counters. Granted, they dont have 80K members, but they do have many (20k) and their servers are much faster (free vs. free).

Would be nice to be able to see some server logs just to show folks the kind of load that counters would put on things. FW also has referral links (if I remember correctly) which help subsidize their forums. Not an option around here (As opposed to deals a la the crucial link).

It certainly is an option. AT just chooses not to utilize it. It would require some re-working of the coding to selectively auto-link certain companies (best buy, staples, etc) but its possible.

It actually has absolutely nothing to do with how many users are in the database. It has to do with simultaneous load. And we have an incredible amount of it, as in the thousands on at any time most of the day. There is no real purpose to thread view counters, it's a "oh it would be cool" feature, those most of the time cost resources. Fat wallets free forums are only faster because they are not bandwidth restricted. The forums absolutely fly, if you aren't on the capped servers. We won't be posting any server logs, as there is no point, most people wouldn't understand deadlock reports from sql server.

Thanks.

Frankly, I'm glad they don't.
