This problem creeps up from time to time, but it seems like we've been getting slammed with a lot of trolls or bots or some other kind of nonsense in OT. Since this is a tech site, I'd like to suggest a fifty (or more) technical post minimum for new posters before access to the Social forums is granted.

It's not without flaws, but neffing and bumping are generally disallowed in the technical forums, so new users would have to show at least some interest in technical discussion. It may help to clean up OT a little.

Careful who you are selecting for. Not everyone is an IT professional, and may not have that much tech knowledge.

If you make the tech forums the gateway to OT, etc, you may end up incentivising a bunch of low quality posts just so ppl can get to 50, or you just fill the forums with the same type of people that pass the filters.

Moderation in the technical forums is stricter than the moderation elsewhere. Crap posts aren't tolerated.

And again, if they aren't here for the tech, why are they here?

Then why not just dump the social forums?
