this thread and its frickin OP reads like a militant's wet dream after dozing off the turner diaries

it was all great advice and discussion untill about page 5 when he started talking about chinese invasions and overthrowing the government, (although the constant references to counterstrike should have raised the RED FLAG and klaxon)

Can they be shipped in the mail?

Must be purchased through a dealer. You can check gunbroker out but you still have to find a dealer that will transfer it to you and they don't do it for free. Normally your best bet is to find one locally.

BTW just personal preference but I would never buy a used gun. I see how some people take care of theirs.

It'll be pretty hard to defend your family using a sidearm (pistol), since most likely you won't be ready for the attack.

Just get a sawn-off 12 gauge pump action shotgun loaded with buckshots -- at a close distance it'll stop almost anything, even a grizzly bear.

Glock 17 (9mm), with 16 rd hi-cap mag + 1 in chamber.

You will hit what you aim at, and it may not blow a hole through every room in your house, unlike a .45 and/or magnum rd.

If you have kids, just get a pistol safe that you can put in your drawer. Quickly unlockable with your code.

Look you practice and if you can hit a target at close range then you should consider a baseball bat instead.

I've had a 30-06 go off in the house before and it only made it through 1 wall 1 ceiling and got stuck in the attic.

There is no way a 9mm or a .45 have more penetration than that anyway.

as far as effectiveness goes. A 9mm might expand but a .45 will never shrink.

Baseball bats require swinging, and one hit may not put the perp down. A 9mm requires the simple movement of a finger, and one shot will put him down. When I hear a bump in the night, I grab my 9mm, not my .40 or .45, and definitely not any of my high powered rifles. I want to be able to wieldd something with very little recoil and extra ammunition. There is absolutely zero reason to buy a pistol for home defense any larger than 9mm. Necessary added stopping power? Haha. You've been playing to much CS if you believe that. Hell, a .25 automatic will suit your purposes perfectly well. And I'd sooner grab my Ruger 10-22 with a 30 rd. mag before my S&W .40.

My local police department uses Sig Sauer firearms. Not sure what caliber, but the officers like them quite a bit.

Sig and H&K are pretty expensive, they are basically top of the line and indestructable. Except $700-800 brand new for either.

Should be able to pick up a used police trade in Glock G22 for under $400

A no frills Springfield 1911 .45 also runs in the $400-$500 range.

Seems any decen't reliable hand gun worth trusting your life too is going to run $400 minimum.

I'm no expert, but I'd reccomend a pump-action shotgun with birdshot. The sound of a pump action shotgun racking is enough to send most burglars/invaders running. If you have to shoot, the birdshot will not penetrate walls unless you are very close.

Hands down, a shotgun with an 18.5" barrel (just over legal), and a pistol grip. Pump action, of course! Load that with double-aught shells, and you'll take anyone not wearing a vest down in one shot. If they're wearing a vest, aim your second shot lower, and they'll go down. 😉

Oh, and believe me, you catch that sucker at less than 15 feet away, and there's no way he's not going down, at least temporarily. Fact is, if he's not wearing, you might just cut him in half......a feat no handgun can match!
