the big names are nice for just ambient music, that you don't have to try too hard to listen to-- louis armstrong, billie holliday are a couple.

thelonious monk is a little more complex, but it's still not in your face.

stay away from miles davis, and the marsalis brothers-- they're a bit too showy, imo.

Buy some Keith Jarrett - possibly the best jazz pianist around, IMHO.

Try either 'La Scala' or 'The Melody at Night With You' for chilled out solo piano music. Failing that, 'Up For It' features him as part of a jazz trio and has some superb stuff including an excellent version of Autumn Leaves.

Hint: go on kazaa (lite) and do a search for "jazz"
*note: I didn't say to download on kazaa - I just said you could search there for starters.

Cosby: Hey, kids! Meet Grampa Murphy.
Child: We have three grampas already!
Cosby: This one's a great jazz musician.
Child: Oh, they _all_ are.
Cosby: Oh, oh: you see, the kids, they listen to the rap music which
gives them the brain damage. With their hippin', and the
hoppin', and the bippin', and the boppin', so they don't know
what the jazz...is all about! You see, jazz is like the Jello
Pudding Pop -- no, actually, it's more like Kodak film -- no,
actually, jazz is like the New Coke: it'll be around forever, heh
heh heh.
