I just finished reading '
Dreadnought' and am in the process of reading '
Castles of Steel'. Awesome books, but not what you are looking for? Continuing with the nautical theme (and, fiction, this time), the book
Master and Command is really quite a bit better than the...errrr....crap movie. It benefits from having nothing to do with it at all except the same character names.
As to 'SciFi/fantasy', the
Golden Compass/Subtle Knife/Amber Spyglass trilogy is very, very, VERY good. "The Golden Compass" won the Carnegie Medal (UK equivelant to the Newberry Medal), The Guardian Fiction Prize, and selected as Children's Book of the Year in the British Book Awards. (Now, saying 'childrens', please understand the scope of the award. The "Dark Materials" trilogy is written to an older audience than the Harry Potter books are, so take that for what it's worth)
