Suggest replacement for my 8800 GT?

I have a computer with an 8800 GT in it and I've diagnosed it as being flaky and needing to be replaced. Can anyone suggest a good replacement? I'm long out of the computer building scene and need some guidance. This computer is used for video editing and I believe the card is in a PCI-E x16 slot. I want to buy new, and preferably from Amazon. Is there anything for $50ish that would be a worthy successor, or even an upgrade?

I appreciate the help!

What CPU have you got in your PC?

You won't really get anything but complete crap at $50- but if you can stretch to $100 the HD7750 is fairly decent.

The processor is a Q6600, like this: http://ark.intel.com/products/29765/intel-core2-quad-processor-q6600-8m-cache-2_40-ghz-1066-mhz-fsb

Thanks for the suggestion. I want to at least match the performance of the 8800 GT. If I need to spend more then I will spend more.

Ah, the Q6600 is a nice processor! Have you overclocked it at all? It has a reputation as an overclocking beast.

And yeah, $50 will generally only get you stuff like a HD6450 or a GT630- I wouldn't want to game on those, at all. Definitely worth going upmarket a bit. Tom's Hardware do a regular roundup of "Best Graphics Cards for the Money", which tends to give good recommendations. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-2.html

Guys, he uses the system for video editing. I don't see anything about gaming in the OP.

He can buy practically anything, but today's equivalent of an 8800gt is this GT640 for $90: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-NVIDIA-GeF...s=gtx+640+ddr3

It will vastly improve CUDA acceleration if you're using Adobe applications, while providing the same gaming performance.

If he won't be doing any gaming at all, he should buy a GT630, or if he's not using Adobe applications, an HD6450 for $40: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Profile-P...2?ie=UTF8&qid=1389718759&sr=8-2&keywords=6450

Thanks for the tips so far, this is great. It's true, the computer is not used for gaming. Its primary use is video and image editing using the Adobe Creative Suite and Pro Tools.

Thanks!

Be aware that between the GT 640 DDR3 and GDRR5, the GDRR5 model is faster. I just wish I could give some sort of review on the MSI GT 640 I bought but my build won't be complete for a while.

I was going to suggest a GT640 as well. Though I don't know what the perf. diff. iis between the DDR3 and GDDR5 versions.

I think this is more of a hobby plus he is patient. Hes still using a Q6600 for goodness sakes.

If I recall correctly, there is a marginal difference.

Heres a decent example

http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/inde...force-gtx-650-1gb-vs-geforce-gt-640-1gb-gddr5

It's ahead of the GTX 650 on the first link although I don't know which GTX 650 because there are a few.

I wish my build was complete because maybe I could find a way to find the exact specs for the GT 640 GDDR5. Even the Nvidia website doesn't show a performance tab for the GT 640. http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt640/specifications

It's like they don't want you to find out how it compares to other cards. Kind of fishy eh?

For anyone wondering though, I got the MSI N640-1GD5/LP at newegg.ca There are some interesting choices though with 2GB models and some brands have the GT 640 with heatpipes.

Even the MSI model I got does not say on the box or the web site or anywhere in the instructions what the exact specifications are.

I agree with the above.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I ended up ordering the GT640 that several of you suggested. Yes, it's a bit lowly compared to the software running on the rig but this is only an ancillary machine for me and doesn't do the heavy lifting for editing.
