I am currently putting together this computer:
AMD64 Rig
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU
DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D Motherboard
(512MB x 2) Crucial Ballistix 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM
BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC PCI-e GPU
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB SATA HD
Dell UltraSharp 1905FP 19" LCD
Lite-On SOHD-16P9S CD/DVD-ROM Drive
Antec SmartPower 2.0 400W PSU
Antec Super LANBoy
Logitech MX510 Performance Gaming Mouse
Generic Keyboard
I already have the RAM, the GPU, the HD, the case, the mouse, and the keyboard.
I've recently been hearing (with alarming and ever-increasing frequency) that DFI motherboards are picky about which RAM is used.
I was wondering if my current RAM would be okay? If someone who reads this has used Ballistix and could give me first-hand confirmation, or if someone could post a link to a review/benchmark of the DFI and Ballistix, I would be deeply grateful.
If the situation ends up being for the worse and I am told that the RAM will not work happily with the motherboard, I am able to sell the RAM, so not all hope is lost. However, that presents me with another dilemma: with what RAM should I replace the Ballistix?
I do lots of multitasking, encoding, and games. I've also read that BF2 runs very well when one uses 2GB of RAM and I know that the extra amount would help me with my other tasks, so I am seriously considering adding another GB of RAM if the Ballistix does not work out. Cost is an issue, however, so please keep that in mind when suggesting a brand for the 2GB dual-channel pack.
Thanks in advance! I know that I can always count on Anandtech for help with whatever computer troubles I or my friends may run into.
