Suggest budget 5.1 receiver to match my Infinity Beta 20's?

Budget is 200, 250-ish tops with shipping. Reputable refurb OK!

It would be nice if it had capable audio over HDMI, but my main concern is a decent match with the speakers. Got fronts and a center, will add a sub and rears later. This is for TV and music.

I'm not able to get out there and listen at shops, unfortunately.

Power is not a big issue, we live in apartments with whiny neighbors.

So far, looking at HK (maker of the Betas), Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Newegg has the Pioneer VSX-819H-K for $250 shipped today (use coupon code EMCLWNW48 to take $20 off to get that price). It should do pretty well for you, does HD audio over HDMI, etc..

Edit: Plus you could get 10% cashback through bing.com so it'd bring it down to $225.

Don't know if you can stack 10% Bing Cash Back.

Also, is that $20 off $200 Paypal promotion still active? (edit: looks like it is no longer on Newegg home page).

Thanks for all who posted. Just won my second beta20 so the pressure is on to get a receiver!

This Denon AVR-788 is attractive at 250 shipped.

That pioneer has TrueHD and MasterAudio as opposed to the Denon. I would like to be able to get 5.1 from an attached PS3 or PC. What is needed for that?

Help, what is better for music with the beta 20s? I am about to pull the trigger from exhaustion.

The 788 will support LPCM (7.1 lossless) audio via HDMI, but not DTS-HD/Dolby Master - all this means is the player will decode the stream from Dolby/DTS-HD to pcm before transmission, rather than the receiver doing it internally.

Personally, I avoid pioneer's lower end due to their amplifier design (small heatsink & power supply), but that's just me. Some current pioneer's have a bit of a reputation with HDMI handshaking/edid issues, possibly worth considering.

Funneh I was just reading aboot that. That means a new player, but I am getting the PS 3 according to my current plan. Hail Mary full of grace. x 1000

Non-Elite Pios just don't have enough power. In your big room, H-K (if you can satisfy yourself that they've fixed the HDMI issues), Marantz, or Onkyo will do best under $400.

Thanks for the suggestion of the Beta 20's S44, I got two from harmon's ebay store.
They are going for about $71 shipped.

Also got an Infinity C250 from OneCall for ~ 100 shipped.

I dont need to have the whole room have good volume, sound quality for music is way more important to me. Movies are a distant second.

Hm, you don't like the Denon? I know nothing about the different brands.

How about this Sherwood?

There is this refurb Onkyo at shopOnkyo or acc4Less, but at 328 shipped it is pretty far outside the budget... and a new one is 380 shipped from newegg today.

Don't like Denon? Blasphemy. Denon is definitely a quality brand receiver. I'd definitely pick up just about any Denon over a comprable Onkyo.

The new budget models dont seem like they are as predictable.
Sounds like lots of hdmi boards fail on the Denon 788, especially on refurb but also new.
S44 mentioned HK's hdmi problems above.

Handshake problems is the other thing that seems common.

HAHA! I canceled a doctors appointment and xrays :Q, but I got the refurb Marantz sr6001 that S44 suggested way back in another thread.
$350 shipped today from accessories4less.com with code FREESHIP
$300 for the sr4002

Edit: it either healed right or it didn't, too late now!

Logitech Z5500
And here is why.
And FYI, all the new sets do not have cables attached to the sats, you can use what comes with or your own wires.

I have them, and they truly are outstanding, and I pretty much owned every brand out there, so to get my set you would have to pry it from my cold dead hands. Sure it lacks a fm tuner, and 14 billion inputs off the back, but it more then makes up for that by delivering kick as sound no matter what you throw at it.
