Suggest a SSD drive for me

Dont have a budget really but would just like to experience the speed of the Speed at a nomimal cost. I have no capacity requirement as I have a 1TB ATA drive which I will use for storage purposes. I'd like to use the SSD for booting purposes only.

BTW can I even use one on my mobo? I have the following :

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=29051

Processor is Q6600
RAM is 4 GB

Also what is the speed difference in percentage between an entry level SSD and the best SSD ?

Thanks! Been a while and lost track of whats goin in the PC components industry.

Some of the entry-level SSDs (I assume you're referring to those 30GB or 40GB SSDs), like the Intel V-25 have very nerfed performance (~40MBps sequential write, slower than many HDDs, but still faster than HDDs when it comes down to random reads and writes though). Your best bet will be 60GB SSDs, which are often as fast as larger SSDs. Cost of a 60GB SSDs isn't much more than those 30-40GB SSDs, so you actually get lower cost per GB.

Unless you want to wait for an uber deal, the cheapest Sandforce SSD right now on newegg is the G.SKILL Phoenix Pro Series FM-25S2S-60GBP2 2.5" 60GB $125

What about the "Crucial RealSSD C300 CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1 2.5" 64GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)"? Storage review says its a class apart.

What SATA III addon controllers are you guys using in conjunction with the above drive?

Is the "Asus U3S6 True USB 3.0 & True SATA 6Gb/s Support Motherboard PCI Card" a safe bet?

The smaller C300s don't do so good with random files.

SATA III is immature, and only has an effect with large files, in any case.

The U3S6 doen't work well at all. You are much better off with the Intel controller on most modern motherboards.

The 60-64Gb sandforce drives are the best deal for the budget set right now. The 64Gb Adata S599 for $112, with 50,000 IOPS, appears to have the "Special Sauce"

Everybody is talking about waiting for gen 3 intel drives. They will be SATA III right? I do have not a SATA III controller on my mobo and have no intention of upgrading the motherboard for this purpose.

Im confused on whether I should wait or not for the gen 3 intel ssds. I know price per GB will come down but I really dont care about that because all I want to use the SSD is for booting. Will there be a much difference in performance between SATA II and SATA III drives?

When the new drives become available, if they are as good as promised, current drive prices will tumble. It's not nessisary to buy a 3rd gen drive to benefit from them.

Right now, if we compare the C300 (currently, the only SATA III compatible SSD) to other SSDs, I don't see a significant benefit SATA III has over SATA II. The maximum sequential read on the C300 is 355MBps versus 285MBps on the Vertex 2. It's faster, but meh. You also don't normally store large files on an SSD, so you won't often make use of that extra bandwidth that SATA III offers.

I highly recommend Sandforce-based SSDs because they also have potentially lower write amplification.

In terms of size, a 60 GB would be fine, but after the second conventional hard disk drive failure in two years, my primary criteria is never fail reliable. So I don't want to have to fool with firm ware updates, my mobo is only sata2, and I have a XP pro OS with 2 gigs ram. It would also be nice to have a 3.5 inch form factor for easier mounting in the case.

After that having SSD speed would be a plus. Would that sandforce unit meet my needs or is there something more reliable out there?

None. You would not benefit enough from a SSD. Yes I have one. Intel G2 80 GB and don't plan on buying another SSD anytime soon. It was not worth it.

Yo slicksilver... You probably can wait. Black Friday isn't too far away. You can spend a month watching prices to gauge what's a banging SSD price. Recently $1.5 a GIG is a typical sale price now. Lowest I've seen was $1 a GIG for the Crucial refurbs.

Also check the For Sale thread. I've seen good SSD deals there and remember, you can always haggle.

You mentioned you're also concerned about boot times. Have you considered standby without the hybrid sleep?
