I'm trying to quiet this switch, there is so much fan vibration when it's mounted onto the chassis.

There's about 30mm clearance for height due to the 1U rackmount form.

I would prefer to use the mounting holes rather than using some sort of thermal epoxy or frag tape.

Are the mounting hole specs similar to that of any radeon or geforce chipsets?

Not center to center but edge to edge as you have pictured, the PIII HS is 55.6mm on
the diagonal. I've modded them for NB HSs. The holes line right up.

EDIT: It would be 35mm tall and need 10mm clearance. Shucks.

That's all I got.

FAC08 or FA420

I'll check quick to see if I can find them for sale anywhere....

I know that the FAC08 comes with some little mounting dealies, but I don't know the dimensions for them.

Of course, the things do come with thermal tape....it can be removed, but it takes awhile, and a bit of rubbing alcohol.
I just suggested the FAC08 because I've used it on videocards in the past, back in the good old days of the TNT and TNT2.

Edit: Computernerd.com has the FA420 for $9, or check out Advanced 2000. They've got either the FA420 or FAC08 for $7.65 each. Don't know what shipping is like for either place though.
Oddly, I couldn't find either one on Resellerratings. But then, their store search engine has never seemed particularly capable.

Hmm, I really don't want to use frag tape. I just don't want it comming off or something while it's being transported or something.

Anyhow, on Advanced 2000, I came across the Vantec Iceberq. I checked Vantec's site for more info and found detailed technical drawings. pdf file, perfect fit! But, it doesn't do the 3rd yellow wire for RPM sensing :( Then the switch will constantly think it has a fan fault so the LED in the front will constantly blink.

edit:

I looked into other VGA coolers Vantec had and I think the Iceberq 4 is the winner! pdf specs. Perfect 55mm mounting distance and a 3 wire connector. Seems a bit loud though, but it should be making that case vibration noise anymore :)

There are many 1U HSs at eWiz.com that are low profile w/rpm sensing fans. Prices vary
quite a bit. They could be bonded on or holes drilled by you for mounting. Position the sink,
mark the holes through the pcb, lite-center punch, then drill. Mod one ;)

I wouldn't use a fan based heatsink. If it was me, I would stick to passive cooling. Do you know what the thermal idle and active tempetures are?

I agree with Galv. The 1U socket 370/A heatsinks are of higher quality Copper and aluminum and can be easily drill tapped to match the thru-hole mounting.

Alpha Z-series. Drill tap the holes.

Or

1U Socket 370/A copper heatsink. Just drill tap the holes.

If you're going to use a thermal compound, you might want to invest into Shin-Etsu 765g. AS5 isn't really matched for this application.

EDIT: You can buy application heatsinks directly from AlphaNovatech. Just look in the General purpose Fin base and then look in the Custom attachment section. They have everything you need.
