Suggest a home security system company - ADT?

Can anyone provide suggestions as to a good home security system company? The ball and chain has ADT coming over next weekend (she is paranoid about security, I never really cared as my fists will protect me), and I'm not so sure they are the way to go (seeing as how much money they spend on advertising - that money has to come from their customers!).

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

I've always been of the opinion that the ability to choose to fight or flee was my greatest guarantee of personal safety. Getting rid of the ball and chain might be the best thing you could do for your own security.

It this actually a home, or a apartment, or condo or ?
Do you live in a high crime area?
You got any dogs?
You looking for constant monitoring?
There are some that you can install yourself that is just as effective.

That said, all ADT will do is call the cops or fire station or Ambulance, there is no guarantee they will make it to your place of living in time to do anything about it.

Umm.... What more can you expect? The guy isn't looking for an on-premise security detail.

Anything BUT ADT. Getting simple "Call the cops when the alarm goes off" service is something that should cost you ~$20/month MAX. Ideally ~$15/month. ADT charges an arm and a leg.

That said, I've heard lots of good things about buying your own personal alarm security kit. Basically, if your alarm goes off it notifies you via Smartphone app and you can call the cops or whatever if you deem it necessary. That said... I don't know how that would work out if you're at home and the thief has a gun to your head...

I use Frontpoint and have been happy with them. Was really easy to install, customer service is awesome and you can add your own Z-Wave devices to it.

Lots of people think that just by getting ADT, that the emergency services will be faster, and that just isn't the case.

Don't sign anything until you really read the contract carefully. It probably says you commit to 3 years, even if you sell the house. And a tiny window of time after the 3 years is up in which to cancel without an automatic renewal.

Have you checked into SimpliSafe?

Well, it's going to be faster than relying on a neighbor to spot something fishy and calling the police as the crooks' moving van with all your stuff is driving down the street.

My experience, new home in 2010, went with ADT. BAD DECISION !!!!!!!!!!!!
First off, the install and this is most common, is done third party.
So you are getting maybe a deal up front but you are also getting older equipment.
Older equipment locked to an older system where grades are impossible.

So years went by, my 3-year ADT contract expired, and I wanted an updated system with remote access via an app, cameras, etc etc.
Well.... you would think as a then current customer of ADT that ADT would cooperate? NOPE!!!!
ADT wanted $1000 up front for their latest system and that system required a ethernet connection wire to my home router.
And that $1000 was a fairly basic ADT system. A few sensors, motion sensor, no cameras.
Cameras were even more $$$. And the monthly monitoring fee jumped a lot for a camera.
ADT? Also not doable since my home router is far away from the ADT control panel.

So I got pissed at ADT and since my ADT contract had completed, I canceled ADT and went with a do-it-yourself home security system that was very basic and not reliable at all.

Then one day out of the blue, a sales rep from VIVINT knocked on the door.
I had never heard of VIVNT and told the sales guy I was not interested.
Then, later, I googled VIVINT and seen they had expanded into my area. vivint had been around for sometime, but never in my neck of the woods so to speak.

So, I called VIVINT directly and here is what happened.
I told the VIVINT rep on the phone what I needed, hardware, features, etc.
Four-camera(s), 8-door sensors, window sensors, two thermostat controls vivint compatible, a second mini control panel downstairs.
For a 5-year contract, vivint gave me everything I wanted, all of it, for no up-front hardware charge other than the $99 install fee.
And.... I now had full remote access, because the VIVINT control panel has a built-in cell device.
No home router needed unless you add cameras.
The VIVINT control panel was stand-alone using its own internal cell service.
Cameras are linked to the security system however cameras use home router WiFi due to bandwidth requirements.

So basically I got over $3000 of hardware for no charge, all hardware installed for $99, and the monthly monitoring fee is exactly what I was paying for ADT, about $70 a month with a VIVINT 5-year contract agreement.

I HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY HAPPY and satisfied with VIVINT.
100% reliable, full and total remote access via their app, I can monitor all cameras, monitor and control both thermostats, remotely check status of all sensors, and naturally arm and disarm the system, all remotely.
Never had a problem. The remote access always works.
As I already said, the cameras do however use my wireless router but only the cameras rely on my wireless router. I would expect this is because the band width is better using my router WiFi instead of relying on the cell service built-in to the vivint control panel.

And the vivint system is highly customizable packed with features, most of which I still have no idea how to use. I only use what I need to use.
Thermostat remote control, remote camera viewing, arming and disarming, and checking which doors have been open and closed so I know when family has let the dog out, went into the garage, or opened any of the other outside doors.
The system can email or text an alert if a door has been left open exceeding a user-customized time limit.
Or, text and email if a thermostat detecting room temperature falling below or rising above a set level.

My only issue was with that 5-year contract. But realizing I was getting everything I asked for hardware wise, over $3000 of hardware for free, I can't really complain.
Especially compared to ADT which wanted me to pay up front for everything I wanted. And even with that ADT still insisted on a new 3-year contract.

All I can say is, that for me VIVINT had everything I needed in a security system.
I especially like the hardware access remotely via the vivint app, and the $70 monthly monitoring fee is more than reasonable when compared to what ADT charged for their basic monitoring package.

I have noticed several orange vivint signs around town since I had my system installed.
So apparently vivint is giving ADT a run for their money.

Who said anything about relying on a neighbor?
Most do it yourself jobs send a signal to your phone/e-mail or whatever, and you (or anyone on the contact list) can call yourself.

I'm with Protectron which ironicly got bought by ADT. If I was to do it over again, I would have gone with a more DIY approach and just found a cheaper service or heck, talk to my boss to see if I can just send the alerts over to work (NOC). I pay like $60/mo or so which is quite a lot when you think about it. I kind of jumped the gun originally when I went with that system as I was contemplating my options and a door to door salesman just happened to be at the right place at the right time. So I got the system for free, but that monthly fee more than paid for it...

That said if you work, or travel a lot, a security system is great piece of mind. Guns don't do you no good if nobody is home to use them.

Fists and shotgun MIGHT be OK when you're there...but when you're not home...the fists are worthless, and the shotgun simply becomes loot for the burglar.

We had ADT when we were in CA for a couple of years. Service was OK...had one false alarm when a door sensor malfunctioned after I changed the battery... Service worked exactly like it was supposed to...alarm triggered, ADT called me on my cell phone, when I told them I wasn't home, they sent the police. I got home while the cops were there, and when there was no apparent break-in, the cops and I entered...and found the malfunctioning door sensor. I was a bit :( that the fuck up was my fault...but the cops were pretty decent sports and "no harm, no foul." (about a year later, the city started charging for false alarm calls) Overall, customer service was pretty decent and the equipment was reliable.(except for the sensor that malfunctioned due to user error)

When our ADT contract was up (2 yr. contract at the time) and our monthly rate nearly doubled, we went to Monitronics. Hands down, the worst of the two. Terrible customer service, billing was fucked up every month, we had constant issues with their equipment. When the 3 year contract expired, we dumped them quickly. We were shopping for a replacement service when we decided to sell the house and move out of CA.

There are lots of DIY install systems out there...some are very good, some are absolute junk. I haven't kept up on which ones are which...and there are a few monitoring services that have great user reviews but have low prices...while others aren't as reliable yet charge ridiculous prices.

I also use Frontpoint, and they have been good. I had a bad window sensor that caused an alarm, and they sent the cops right away. I didn't know that I could add Z-Wave devices though. How does that work?

Yeah something that uses cellular is better, no wires to cut, though cell can also be jammed. so one that uses both is best. Unfortunately it was not an option when I got my system, it was one or the other. I think it does report an error if it loses communication though, so I'd get a call, and go check it out.

Here is the simple truth, all of them are basically identical. If you are going to pay for monitoring, go with who ever has the cheapest monthly rate. Personally, I don't think monitoring is even all that useful. What you really want is a nice loud siren.

been using simplisafe for the last 6 months. Nothing has been stolen and no intruders. It must be working.

In all seriousness it is very simple to install and I know the monitoring works. I went with a custom system that only uses motion sensors. Too many windows in my house to bother with all those glass sensors.
