Suggest a good place in West Virginia for a 1/2 day visit

I live in northern VA.

decided to take a random trip. I've never been to WV.

any good places to visit for a 1/2 day trip?

Beartown, Falls of Hills Creek, Cranberry Glades, Droop Mountain (watch for the lookout, especially at sunrise/sunset), Greenbanks Radio Observatory...or come to my place 🙂

Gauley River, Hawks Nest State Park, New River, and Summerville. They are all pretty close together and offer hiking, white water rafting, a lake, and great scenery. Just whatever you do DO NOT GO OVER THE SPEED LIMIT not even 1mph over in Summerville or Gauley Bridge if you go through them. Those places live off tickets. My granny lives in Gauley Bridge. Use to be a dude in Summerville that would fly you out over the New River Gorge in a cessna for $5 a person called $5 Frank I think 🙂. He was probably close to 80 when I took a ride with him about 5 years ago though so I doubt he is still doing it but others probably are, doubt its $5 though.

A 1/2 day doesn't really give you time to do much. You need to make it a couple of days at least.

Lots of good suggestions already like white water rafting on the Gauley, hiking through the Cranberry Glades, checking out the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank.

If you like biking there's the Greenbrier River Rail Trail.

If you like ATVing there's the Hatfield McCoy Trails. They say you can mountainbike on them, but unless you're some sort of superman, forget about it.

And if you've got the dough you can stay at the Greenbrier Resort and take a tour of the Cold War Nuclear Bunker underneath it. Tours of the bunker are only open to resort guests right now and it costs about $380 a night for the standard room. Tours will be open to the public starting August 20th a couple of days a week for about $30.
