Suggest a freezer

Well it is time for me to invest in a stand alone freezer since I am able to buy meat products in bulk through my employer. It looks as though I'll be getting the following:

20lbs Spicy Breaded Chicken Patty
20lbs Boneless Skinless Breast
8 (or 16) Chicken Fajita Kits
10lbs Hot Wings
24 Beef Center Fillets

Now obviously there is no way in hell all of that will fit in the freezer above my fridge so I need something else. What are some decent, fairly priced freezers. I really don't want to spend more than $250-300 including delivery.

yes, and they are INVALUABLE.

250-300 will get you a nice freezer (I'd suggest a chest type instead of standing...keeps cold in better)

check out sears or any appliance place. They're not that expensive.

I've been looking at Sears.com and noticed they have free delivery on all freezers over $299 and 0%APR if you use your Sears card. Have any recommendations?

Free delivery is definitely plus seeing as to how the nearest Sears is 30 miles from here and I have no way of getting it to my place.

I think our chest freezer is a Kenmore, it's many years old and still going strong.

I know that I've been looking at a few lately and you can get a nice size one for around $200-250cdn.. so I assume theyd be cheaper in the states 🙂

I know this doesnt help but just my .02

I am in the market for a chest type freezer.

It seems that the going rate for a 7 cubic foot freezer is about $180 and I've looked a a few makes and they seem to be the same to me.

I'm just waiting for a friend with a pickup truck to take me to a store. Delivery is $50.

ive used both chest and standing freezers.

THe chest ones you just seem to pile stuff in and forget whats at the bottom and then it goes bad/really old.

The standing ones you can always see everything and its easier to access everything that is within it.

chest freezers are more efficient and tend to have lower service costs - they're also much cheaper.

FWIW, kenmore is made by whirlpool, so don't spend extra on the whirlpool thinking it's better - it's not.

we have a frigidaire (sp?) that we got at lowe's on closeout - keep an eye out for scratch & dent models as well - it's an easy way to save alot of money (who cares what your freezer looks like?).

also, try to get one with a bunch of baskets and a light - both are invaluable for finding what you need and keeping things separate.

good luck.

An average chest freezer is roughly 100~150kWh/year more efficient than the upright, @ about $0.11 per kWh or roughly $10.00~16.00 more per year to operate. (It would make more sense to purchase a more efficent dryer or have cloth lines)

A chest freezer is okay if you have the floor space for it (basement/garage) or want a large volume with relatively lower dollar/cubic foot. I have own both chest & upright freezer, and I find that I don't lose stuff to the freezer void witht he upright, and the upright take less work to find things.

The question is,
How much freezer food do you/your family consume per month?
Are you willing to eat at home more often if you have food in the freezer?
Then purchase a freezer at 50% or greater volume than you need, once you figure out how much frozen food that you consume (average food can stay in the freezer between 3-18 months).

Ended up picking up this Kenmore 5.0 cu ft chest freezer. Going to be delivered on Wednesday.

Delivery was expensive, but I'm getting my moneys worth since they are traveling ~75 miles round trip.

Good one. I don't like upright freezers as whenever you open them you lose a lot of the cold air so it runs a lot more. When you open a chest style, you hardly lose any and runs less hence more effecient.
