Suggest a better Prosumer Digital Camera

I have been eyeing the Canon G2/G3 and Olympus 5050 for several months now. I have to have a fast lense, aperature ~2.2 or lower, and full manual control. I can get the G2 for $500, G3 for $595, and 5050 for $650. Can anyone suggest a better camera for less than these models? I am leaning toward the G3 for it's better design, both physically and menus, plus it uses compact flash which I think might be the fastest memory unless someone can prove me wrong.

I forgot to mention the Sony DSC-S85 which is really hard to find now. I can get it for $479.00, but it is getting old and I don't have much love for Sony and it's mostly proprietary memory stick format.

I'm also not a big Sony fan, but I'm a huge DSC-s85 fan. Great lens, excellent battery life. Memory sticks are a bit more expensive than other flash memory, still pretty reasonable however. I went back and forth for a couple months on the same models and picked the Sony and don't regret it a bit. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the models you listed.

I thought that "Carl-Zeiss" lens was just a marketing hype until I actually tried it. It is really impressive & I ended up buying one.

the canon S series is a high end consumer camera, the G series is the prosumer. if you want anything prosumer, you will be paying the price. hvae you looked into the minolta 7H, 7Hi, etc...

If you want a FAST lens then the 5050 Oly is for you. I have a 4040 (F1.8 lens) and love it. The only thing I wish it different was CF instead of SM cards. all those cams are nice and I do not think you can go wrong.

The 4040 was actually my first choice, but it was unavailable for the most part when I started searching back in January/February. The only thing at that time were refurbished ones from Olympus (on eBay from $419-498).

There is actually debate as wheter it is a Carl Zeiss lens, as the S85 uses the same lens as the S75 (which I tried to buy when Staples was clearing them out at $104.50 in February).

Thank you for the replies. The question is now moot, I broke down and bought the G3 from Dell for $558.65. I know my wife and I will love it, of course we would have loved any of the others I listed, as everyone else does. I also bought the fast
Kingston 256MB compact flash card from Dell for $52.31 ($32.31AR).

I think you made a good choice with the G3. I've had mine a couple of days and it is fantastic. It's getting put through it's paces tomorrw.

I'm just a bit dissapointed that you got a rather better price (I paid more in UK pounds than you did in US dollars 🙁 )
