256mb will only make a differance if the GPU is powerful enough to use it, IE dont buy a 256mb 5200/9600/5700 etc. The minimum 256mb card i would reccomend is the 6800GT. The 9800 pro has a 256mb version, but its 128mb is such a better value.

Just read this review and check out the games that are important to you and see how much you'd like to spend. You could consider 9600xt as fast as your 9600pro for simplicity's sake.

Also remember Doom 3 performance is higher with 6800 series cards. You could view doom 3 benchmarks on the same website in the Video section.

Is 9600 pro still good enough to play games like Doom3 and upcoming games this year . Where I can buy 6800 for a decent price . Anyone wants to have my TI4200??

Doom 3 Performance with 9600xt

You can search Pricewatch.com or pricegrabber.com for a 6800 card or computer hardware of your choice for the lowest prices.

I'd recommend getting a Leadtek 6800 for $290

It has a quieter fan than the stock 6800 and a beefier copper heatsink that should aid in overclocking.
This card also comes with Splinter Cell: pandora tomorrow and Prince of Persia

Evga cards come with a free copy of Far Cry. Msi cards come with a collection of games as well. Gainward provides the goldensample card that has an enhanced mode that should automatically overclock the card.
