Suffering from star trek withdrawal.........help!!!

Hey everyone, I don't know if I'm gonna get flamed for this or if I'm breaking some sort of forum rules, but here goes. I loved Star Trek: The Next Generation and lately I have really wanted to watch the series again, but alas not a single channel in my area carries ANY old Star Trek episodes. So I was kinda wondering if there was any place online that I could download some of the episodes. I always hear about people downloading tv shows/music videos/etc, but I have no idea where they get them from.

So can anyone elighten me? I have morpheus and I tried downloading an episode there, but after it was finished downloading and I tried to play the file I got nothing but audio. I tried updating windows media player but it still didn't work.

Must.......Watch......Star.....Trek.......

Try Morpheus, or Imesh. They are kinda like napster only you share vids too. Both are poor programs but you get what you need. Morpheus is better.

Cougar, was the episode you Downloaded a divx? i konw it's most likely not a divx, but if it was, you need a program to watch it, but you might already konw that...

I have Morpheus and that's what I used to download this episode. It took about 90 mins. and after it was done all I got was audio.

Homer_Simpson...

No, it wasn't a divx file, it was an avi file. I figured maybe updating my 6.4 media player to 7.1 (or whatever the latest version is on microsofts site) would do the trick, but it didn't. All I get it audio.

cougar. Yeah just saw that.😱

90 mins eh? you must have dial-up:disgust::frown:

I was just discussing with a friend how THERE ARE TOO MANY DAMN FRIGGIN' CODECS. I'm sorry but there really are. I really am getting sick of media player too. sheesh! They should just make everyone follow a certain compression algorythym set up by the Motion Pictures Expert Group. I think MPEG4 is good.

I'm sure there is logic behind having 50 million codecs (yeah right) but this really is ridiculous!

Actually I have a cable modem. I don't know how morpheus works, but it looked like it had opened up 5 different connections to get the file (kinda like how download accelerator works) and about 5 mins. into the download it dropped 2 connections and then my speed just dropped right down the crapper. It sucks that I can hear the episode but not see it.

I'm gonna keep trying things on my end, but does anyone have any other suggestions as to where I can go to get an episode or two? Or maybe even a clue why I'm gettin audio but no video?

Buy/rent those ST:NG video tapes.

I think 90% of AnandTechers are not familiar those with words, please provide a link to dictionary.com 🙂

<< Buy/rent those ST:NG video tapes. >>

Well, I would rent some episodes if I could, but the video stores in my area don't have any episodes for rent. You should see the blockbuster by my house, the scifi section is just sickening. In fact I think they actually got rid of it entirely. Also, buying them is out of the question because I'm not working now and I need to save every penny I have for only the necessities (gas, food, cable modem 🙂 ). Now before any of you out there start harping on me for trying to "steal" intellectual property think real hard before you cast that stone.

cougar, do you have divx codec installed? it sure sounds like you didn't have the correct codec if all you got was audio.

divx files have the extension .avi... divx is just the compression codec, it's still a avi file.

Really? So it could be a divx file? I'm going to try and find the codec and install it to see what happens. Don't go anywhere just in case this doesn't work 🙂

there's a few of them on Kazaa. It's not the greatest peice of software, but there's 49 terrabytes of media on there right now, you can find a lot of cool stuff.

HOLY COW, HOLY COW, HOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, but I haven't seen The Next Generation series in about 3 years and I'm just a little bit excited 😀 Now if there was only a way to clean up the image a little bit I could die a happy man. 🙂

Star Trek, here I come.....

Hey now, I'm no freak. Maybe a bit eccentric with a touch of insanity, but definately not a freak 😉

As I said in my first post not a single channel in my area shows re-runs of The Next Generation. I've got cable and the closest I can get is the original series on the Scifi channel, but that's just not the same. It's got to be The Next Generation or Deep Space 9 to make me happy.

Oh yeah, we do get UPN which shows voyager, but our cable signal is so bad that the channel comes in as pure static. If I stand on my head and squint real hard I can almost make out something on that channel. I've called the cable company out at least 4 times to fix our crappy reception and yet they never seem to be able to fix it. One of these days I'm going to have to take matters into my own hands.
