:(

Playing Painkiller Black (GOG version) for several months and suddenly I can't save the game. Every time I try to load the latest save, the game throws me to the desktop with error message.
Painkiller.exe
1.0.0.1
42d3c457
Engine.dll
0.0.0.0
4214b251
c0000005

D:\Program Files (x86)\GOG\GalaxyClient\Games\Painkiller Black\Bin\Painkiller.exe
D:\Program Files (x86)\GOG\GalaxyClient\Games\Painkiller Black\Bin\Engine.dll

I can load the last save, but not a current save. (Doesn't matter where in the game I save, it will not load.Just throws me to the desktop). Any fixes? Please help.

If you load a previously working save, then save the game twice (in two separate new save files) immediately after each other, can you then load the first of the two new save files, but not the very newest one?

What I'm trying to get at is if all new save files are being corrupted, or if the game just can't load the very latest file for some reason but can then load that same file later if a new save is made so that file is no longer the newest one, or if it's just that one current save file that is corrupted and other new files are fine.

If the first, it's likely game corruption (reinstall) or hard drive/memory errors (run some diagnostics). If the second, I honestly have no idea what might cause it except maybe a strange bug in the game. If the third, then just go back to a previous save, maybe lose a bit of progress, and continue playing the game off of a new save file.

Can't load any new saves, regardless whether it's the newest of not.. If game corruption, do I save save games to desktop folder, reinstall and then move saves back to gamesave folder?

I don't know about this game specifically, but that's what I'd normally do. I'd also run some hardware diagnostics first, just to be sure it's not the physical hardware causing the problem.

This statement makes no sense. Can you load any save at all (e.g. the very first first one you made months ago), or is it just the newest ones that fail?

If it's the latter, I suspect you might have a very large number of saves in the save folder (e.g. 100/1000). If so, try deleting/moving the oldest ones and renaming the newest ones to start from 000 (or whatever the oldest one starts with). That engine can have issues when the save count reaches 3 or 4 digits and the numbers stop incrementing properly.

Needless to say, backup before you start playing with the files.

You're right...I have 66 saves...and it's just the newest ones that won't save. I guess deleting saves in game is not enough.
