Sudden LCD Inverter failure after laptop hinge repair, any idea how and/or why?

I'm repairing an HP DV6000 white special edition, had a broken left hinge but the computer still turned on, LCD lit up fine, everything was working as it should. I took apart the top cover, replaced the hinge and reassembled, but now the LCD is super dim I can only see it with a flashlight. Everything's connected right, inverter is hooked up fine; I didn't disconnect it when I did the hinge though. Could I have shorted it somehow or do these things just fail? I did take the battery out and unplug it before taking it apart. I wasn't wearing a grounding strap but I make sure not move from my seat once I start work so there's no static electricity buildup.

I mean, it is only $5 shipped for a new one or $3 used so I ordered one already, just sucks I have to wait for that now after waiting for the hinges. Any ideas what I did to fry this thing? Has this happened to anyone else?

Check the connections again and make sure the cables are not connected in opposite direction, or in any other way than they should be. Verify it on the inverter+on the mobo.
Also check if the cables themselves are ok, if there are no loose connectors/contacts as this is not electronic failure.

No dice, rechecked inverter connections to and from backlight and to mobo; even flipped them over and they only go in one way.
I'm guessing its the inverter because I just figure it would 'blow' like a fuse rather than the backlight burn out instantly. Like I said, the screen was lit like normal when the hinge was broke just 20 minutes prior. I checked the cable itself and there's no frays or pinches in it, all connectors are solid too. :-/

You can get one off eBay for $3.50 to $5.00 shipped, so that might be the way to go to pick up a replacement.

Yea I already ordered one. I must not have waited long enough for the current to drain out or something, I dunno. I scoured the internet and couldn't find much on why they fail, other then "they just do." Thanks google! /fail
