Sudden FPS Drops in CS

I was playing cs a couple days ago and for no good reason my FPS started droppin down to 5-20 and it only last for like 4 seconds and goes to my usual 60-100, i reformatted after trying every console command that would fix it, and also playing with different advanced settings messing with opengl and d3d, i also tried all resolution except 1280x960 on both Direct 3d and Opengl, i downloaded the newest directx9.0b. I tried the 3.6 drivers, whatever came on the disk and the newest 3.10 drivers. Alot of people said fix ur rates and they're fine and told me the ati_subdiv and the other ati command and i already had those off, i have a radeon 9600xt. This makes no sense does anyone have any ideas that could help me??? any input would be appreciated.

Yes im using steam. I know ATI released something saying that cat 3.6 worked for steam but ive tried it and ti doesnt for me. plus i think it was just for v3.7 and 3.8 users.

do you have AA or AF forced on with your vid card?

Also, how are you connected to the internet? Any wireless setup involved?

Are you using the same server all of the time? Or is it on different servers? Sometimes I'll get low pings that look like i'm freezing up, but my net graph goes way down and back up and i'm on cable. Its like the server can't provide enough info to me at some times.

I would like to add, make sure you`ve installed the AGP chipset driver for your motherboard, also try CS with "V-Sync "off which is in ATi control panel, that should boost your FPS.

AF wise it`s best to have it on "performance " setting,I prefer 16x AF perfomance setting myself which gives me minimal drop in speed AF wise.

alright, sorry i didnt know the thread had been moved i was at school all day. so ill answer you questions in this post.
Guidot im using different servers each time, about 30 different ones and the same thing happens, it even happens in servers where i get 30 ping.
Bule I have a ADSL connection, its connected through a router. AF (antistropic filtering im guessing) is application prefference along with the other,
Confused I think i have truform on, im not sure should it be on?
m4h I have the cat 4.1 i beleive, whatever the newest version is.
mem I dont know my motherboard, POS HP 🙁, so i dont know what agp drivers to get, and my aa/af setting are at application preference, but i will say ive turned them both on and put them at 16x performance and it is still the same result.

i would try uninstalling your drivers entirely, then install the catalyst 4.1 drivers, turn off AA/AF and TruForm.

Are you running anything else while gaming? Anti-virus, Motherboard Monitor, a bandwidth-hogging P2p app? Does your fps drop when a lot of people are on the screen? Smoke grenades? At random times or regular intervals?

only thing i run in the background is ventrillo and mirc. ive tried cs without those and its the same, its lags randomly, not when tons of people or smoke, infact i threw 4 smokes into a conrner on nuke and didnt lag but then coming out ct spawn i lagged, it makes no sense.

no, just find one that you can use to test out and see if your video card is the problem. Any one, borrow from someone or something. If the problem persists, then it is not the video card, but maybe a little more complicate thing, like your motherboard.

I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago....What I noticed after a while was it only happens when /thetime is requested of the server or Admin say.......It was a trip never had that happen before. I uninstalled steam [Takes about 15m to reinstall now since steam is not bogged down!] and the problem went away. Just try reinstalling steam it will only take 15 minutes of your time and I bet you anything it fixes it.

one thing i really hate about steam/windows, is whenever i format, or reinstall steam or windows, my sensitivity never feels the same. i even save my config, or write the exact sensitivity/m_pitch down, and it never feels the same. im pretty sure you guys have encountered that problem. i tried installing the logitech drivers for my mx300 mouse, and those drivers are just horrible. is there any trick to getting that sweet spot to STAY whenever you format or reinstall steam? im just curious, i formatted last nite and i couldnt hit anything! before i formatted i was headshotting people like nothing, now i cant hit for crap!

btw: windows accel is off, i ran the winxp mouse fix, and i put everything in steam to how i had it, still feels all weird!
