Sudden end to sound...

I have a home built computer that has been running stably for months. I just added an extra hard drive for storage and it lost sound. When I play a song in Wanamp, it stalls about 1/2 a second into the track. No sound is coming out of the speakers at all. I rebooted and this solved the problem for ~30 seconds.

Try unplugging your HDD. Does the problem still remain? Maybe a PSU issue? (long shot, but something to look into)

Good luck!

I reinstalled the sound card drivers and sound came back - for an hour. Then it died again. I am going to have to isolate the HDD and see if it is the culprit...

I used to have this card. It's a known issue in Win2k/WinXP.
Here's the fix: http://www.vortexofsound.com/techhelp/th-v2a80.htm
Hope that helps you.
