I recently bought a new computer that I installed windows on by myself. I am finding something very annoying with it. I will have a download going at around 390kb and it will keep running like that. The problem starts when I do anything with my PC. Running an explorer cuts my speed down to 250 and even when I windows it goes down. On my old PC this didnt seem to happen. Now I know this isnt the most important of issues but just something I find annoying. If anyone can help me stabalize my speed I would greatly appreciate it. Maybe I need to adjust modem settings or download (or update) something in windows to get it stabelized. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated

I am NY Time Warner using PCX1100U Modem

Also, please state system specs and exact operating system. If you installed XP, chances are you might be low on RAM...

Quite possible that Schadenfroh's right. You can download HijackThis from the link in my sig. Install it in its own folder like C:\HijackThis. Then open the program and run the scan. Don't do anything else other than save that scan to a log and copy/paste it in your next post. Schadenfroh and I will be a long to take a look.

If you're not ready to admit that it could be spyware/malware related .... you can do other simple tweaks to see if it picks up. DSL reports has a "tweak" tool that will help you optimize some key settings to make downloading more efficient. You can try that. While you're there, it won't hurt to run their packet loss test.

HOWEVER

To me, it sounds like something has your system "busy" and its effecting your download speed when you open something else up. That could very well mean your system has been infected with bugs.

before i give you a solution, i need to know if you are running a "free" version of Internet Download Manager or did you pay for it and get the full paid version?

cold2000us,

Before you do anything
1. Make sure that you have extracted HiJackthis to a folder that is isolated before removing anything, for hijackthis makes backups within the folder it is in.
2. Download but do not run, winsockfix, KazaaBegone, and LSPfix
3. Disable system restore, malware can come back through it.
4. Reboot into safe mode.
5. Close all browsers/windows explorer.

fix the following in hijackthis(kill the process in process viewer, if its there)
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\system32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART
  • O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer) -

Additional Steps

1. Run KazaaBegone, if your internet connection dies upon reboot, use winsockfix to repair it (merijn has notes on what to do if your net dies after using this tool)
2. Clear your Temporary Files
3. Remove the following VIA instructions provided:
[*]P2P networking
4.Restart into normal windows

Also, you have many things running there, see my Guide to Free Performance to and look through to see if anything is safe to disable to free up system resources.
