Sudden Death in NFL overtime

A time-limited system of some sort is necessary. Though the current system doesn't actually guarantee a timely end, in practice it is pretty rare for it to go to Double OT. I think a coin toss is a stupid system, though. I think it should be that whoever had the ball at the end of regulation gets to keep the ball.

No way! It is perfect in Hockey and even Soccer, but in a game like Football it just doesn't work. They definitely need to change it.

It needs to be more like college, but from the 40 yard line, that way a FG from the beginning is a very difficult unless you move the ball..

How do you guys stand?

THe argument to keep the SD is terrible. He's basically saying: because the alternative isnt PERFECT, we'll keep this ridiculous rule that everyone hates.

I have no issue with sudden death during the regular season but I would like to see some type of time limited overtime for the playoffs and Super Bowl.

Edit: I don't really follow the college game, what do they do for ties?

Really?

I personally think the current rule sucks. They might as well just let the coin flip itself decide who wins. That being said, I don't really think the college way of doing it is better for the NFL.

It(sudden death) really doesnt make sense in football if you think about it. Both teams play to a tie in regulation. Why shouldnt they both be offered an equal opportunity in overtime?

horrible,

Need to go to college, and put the ball at the 50 yardline...college should do the same thing.

I'd like to see OT handled by sudden death via TD or by score at the end of an OT Qtr (ie. a FG can win but only at the end of the OT Qtr).

they just need one change to the current rules. They just need to specify that each team gets the same number of possessions. So, in the case of the Sand Diego game, they drove right down and scored on their first possession of the OT. So, they would kick off normally and Indy would have a chance to drive down and score a touchdown to tie the game back up.

That completely removes all pressure to score at the end of the 4th quarter with the game tied.

Yea, really. His Monday Morning QB articles are great. And he's a genuinely nice guy.

Anyway, as was said in the argument - it's not like they flip the coin and whoever wins it wins the game. They need to drive down the field and score. That happens about 1/3 of the time. The majority of the time, NFL overtime is at least 2 possessions. So why change it?

I think it should be close to another half period, say 7 or 8 minutes of overtime. If it is tied again at the end of that, then go to SD

as for US football IMO they should play more the college system is also stupid but better then SD

also IMO they really should not allow you to just take a kneel for 3 downs to end a game. you should be forced to play and it would be your own fault if you toss an int of fumble and lose the game

i have more beef with that then the OT rules actually

Except that the team that takes the ball still only wins ~51% of the time.

Easy, because if you're the best team you will win in the clutch like you failed to do in regulation. Your defense will make the stop when it's most critical. Your offense will score when you most need it and not fold under the pressure. There is no such thing as "fair" when it comes to being the best.

College just does it because they wanted to be different and they want the games to last longer (also see: stopping the clock temp after a 1st down). It's stupid.

Nothing more needs to be said about this topic IMO, IF you're the best, you will prove it when it's most needed. Do you disagree with that?

I like the coin toss... however, I believe they shoud play a full Quarter again.
Repeat until there is no longer a tie.

Thats a good point, I change my opinion on the previous post. OT should consist of roughly half another period (7 or 8 mins) and then if its still tied after the OT period then the game is a tie

29% of the time the team that wins the toss drives down and scores without the other team touching the ball. Overall, however, the coin toss winner only wins 52% of the time. It seems fair but these numbers are somewhat misleading because in 1994 a rule changed moved the kickoff back 5 yards to the 30 yard line (those numbers were based on data from 1973-2003). Since then, it's been about 60%. Prior to the rule change, the coin toss had no predictive value for deciding who would eventually win the game. Since 1994, the coin flip winner has a clear advantage.

I hope you're being sarcastic because ties still exist (see: Eagles vs Bengals this year). I say get rid of the tie and you play til someone scores. I don't care if they have to crawl into the end zone, make it like baseball where the game lasts indefinitely until one team scores. Boxing also needs to get rid of the bullsht "12 round" crap. You fight until one man drops, just like they used to do back in the day. Fcking primadonna bullsht = boxing today.
