Ok, here's a stumper for you guys. Let's see if any of you can solve it.
Problem
I just finished watching a DVD with no problems. Then we popped in "Gladiator" and no audio. Popped the one we just finished back in and no audio. Restarted, no audio. Popped in a music CD, it plays fine.
Tech details
DVD:
"Gladiator" is encoded with three different audio options: DTS, dolby digital 5.1, and dolby surround 2.0.
Hardware:
Sony DDU220E 6X DVD-ROM (DMA enabled)
Creative PC-DVD Dxr3 decoder card
Creative SoundBlaster Live!Value sound card
Cambridge SoundWorks (original) speakers
Software:
Creative PC-DVD Player
Microsoft Windows ME
Notes
The computer is in good working condition. I take pride in tweaking everything to optimize stability, performance, and functionality. There are limits to the tweaking that I do (ie. I do not overclock, do not install warez, do not install utilities to enhance performance (I do, however, like to edit ini files/Windows registry, etc.)).
My observations
A time span about three minutes elapsed between the ejecting of the first DVD and the loading of "Gladiator".
The just-ejected first DVD is quite hot to the touch, but seems normal for having been read for nearly 2 hours.
Since the DVD-ROM is reading audio tracks from music CDs, video from DVDs, and files from data CDs, it is unlikely that the DVD-ROM drive has failed.
Since the sound card can play mp3s, wavs, and audio cds, it is also unlikely that the sound card has failed
However, if the audio portion of the DVD decoder card failed, the entire card would not function...but i still get video...
