Sucks to live in NY (taxes)

For those of you who pay high taxes (or think you do), there was an article in the paper the other day that we pay the highest property taxes in the nation. (upstate NY). Average property taxes are (off the top of my head from the article) about $80 per $1000. The 2nd highest state was NJ, paying around $60 per $1000. NOW I can see why people can afford $250,000 homes in other states... I keep forgetting that my mortgage payment includes an escroll account for the taxes.

So, on top of 8.25% sales tax (and virtually everything that isn't FOOD is taxable here.... Soda, beer, etc. taxed, because they're not food. Even bottled water is taxable, since it isn't food

Then, we have the highest property taxes in the nation,

And, higher than average income tax rates...... (NYC has slightly lower property taxes, but makes up for it in even higher income taxes)

I should move to a different state!!! Suggestions?

At least you didn't spend $58 yesterday getting someone to tell you that your car doesn't pollute too much and you now have the priviledge to pay the DMV $56 for a sticker.

we're behind NJ in the car insurance rates... I wouldn't be surprised to see that we're 2nd or 3rd though.

Well, over here people can't afford $250,000 homes. There simple aren't any $250,000 homes. Condos cost that much over here.

I hear ya....its bad

but its not as bad as NJ

I moved from NJ to Upstate NY and my car insurance dropped about 30%, property tax dropped too, plus at least there's the STAR exemption in NY

Mass. and Washington DC beats NY. NJ and NY are both hard states to live in right now.

I made the mistake of moving back to Upstate NY for a year (2000-2001). I moved back to VA and have stopped bitching about our own tax problems as a result. You are right to want to move to another state. Try Florida for a state with low taxes and cost of living.

yes, one of many reasons i was glad to leave NY state

That was the reason I left NY in 1988.

In 1986 the Taxes on our 3 bedroom ranch was $3,000
In 1987 it jumped to $5,000
In 1988 it jumped to $8,000

When my Grandparents left there in 1990 it had jumped to $11,000

I live in Western NY and my property taxes are not $80 per $1000. They are about $33 per $1000 and that is before the star exemption, about $27.50 after the star exemption. Property taxes include school, county and I think there is another one in there but can't remember it.

I guess upstate is considered the northern and eastern part of NY.

I lived in the Finger Lakes region and near Corning. They are both considered Upstate, as is Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo. Anything NOT New York City is Upstate...

No, but we pay $43 for registration and plates. Then $15 for a whole safety inspection.
🙁

yeah, move to cali, where property prices are $500,000 to a million. but atleast we capped property taxes back in the day, sales taxes are same as NY cept the soda and water part...
