February 15, 2017 McDonald’s USA will be giving away the limited edition, and probably-more-revolutionary-than-actually-needed Suction Tube for Reverse Axial Withdrawal (the STRAW) at participating restaurants nationwide.*

Customers who purchase a Chocolate Shamrock Shake at participating restaurants will receive one of these exclusive straws on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. Only a few straws will be available at each participating restaurant. Those who aren’t near a restaurant where the straws are being given away should follow McDonald’s Facebook page, as well as their local McDonald’s Twitter handle for a possibility to win one of these coveted straws

Or, you can use a normal straw with a few extra openings...

this is a good advert because it pokes fun at the current adverising tropes of the tech industry.

They dumbed it down. They came right out and told people the joke, and that ruined it. They should have played it straight, and if some people don't get it, well... you don't ruin art to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I'd have left the end in as the only clue. They made an amusing commercial that could have been brilliant.

If they didn't tell people that it was a joke, someone would've sued them for some bs reason.

The point of an ad is to get people in the door, being clever is just a proxy for that. Given that the core McDonald's crowd is generally senile, poorly educated, or both, there was no way they weren't going to ruin the joke for the sake of clarifying their real message.
