Such a beautiful racing car...

Great when it came out in the 60s and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans many times consecutively, but the McLaren MP4/4 is just an amazing piece of engineering in every sense.

1.5L V6, twin turbocharged engine, 6-speed manual transmission. An impressive beast that had ~650HP in race form and 1200HP in qualifying form. This was at the time that drivers actually made a huge difference in how the races could turn out.

NA Formula One cars in the early to mid 90s were actually less reliable and were prone to very unstable behavior. Aryton Senna, probably to this day the best driver the world has ever seen, died in 1994 in San Marino GP in a crash at 120MPH due to the steering column in his car failing. Many other drivers had problems with the cars been prone to sudden oversteer while in corners and the cars being extemelely nervous. The 1980s cars weren't as secure, but they had a lot less problems regarding that. That's probably easily explained by the fact in the early 90s electronics took over even though they were still in their infancy. This was fixed, of course, but drivers mean very little nowadays.

Basically this ^

I believe tungsten skids (or similar) were used to protect the underbody aero and to keep it functioning. If the underbody aero actually hit the pavement the car would lose half or more of it's aero downforce and probably fly out of it's turn.

I would say that it's more likely to be titanium skids...

That's a cool car, but for Formula cars, I like the look of the ones in the 60's. I like this one with the exposed headers in the back. It's so simple and clean. There are some others I've seen that I like better, but this is what I happened to find in my search:

Overall, I think the best looking racing car ever was the Ferrari P4.

That P4 is simply gorgeous! There's so many beautiful racing machines out there it's hard to pick just one.
