successor to Crucial M4 any time soon?

hey guys, just to be sure but I don't think there's any info on it yet. So here goes anyway...

I'm preparing my next desktop upgrade and I have made up my mind on pretty much every component, except for the SSD.
I currently have a Crucial C300 64GB as a superfast boot disk in my HTPC, and last year I've put a Crucial M4 64GB in my mother-in-law's new desktop. Both SSD were released less than a year apart, and the latter has been around for about the same period now. Price/performance I'm quite happy with these SSD's, so why not stick with it...
Additionally I've read on the AnandTech site that Marvell has announced a 3rd generation controller a couple of weeks ago.

Putting A & B together makes me hope there will be a new generation Crucial SSD's any time soon.
I know, you can always wait for the next HW improvement, but as my upgrade can easily wait a couple of weeks I might just wait till these SSD's are there.

Has anyone picked something up on the grapevine? 🙂

indeed, that's true. I can imagine just after launch the price will be considerably higher for the newer generation while the current generation might even drop further to get rid of the stocks.

It's a logical assumption there will be an "m5" released on the new Marvell controller but there has been no official work or unofficial leak. You could be waiting a long time.

If you want reliability and speed and don't trust Sandforce, go for the Samsung 830.

Depending on where you live the 830 is not way too expensive. This isn't 2009 where 80GB of Intel godliness was $600. With the current price wars, I wouldn't fret over $30. I waste that on trying bad new dinner dishes or hard liquors.

Lowest price I seen are Crucial M4 128GB for $100 from newegg today only and the Samsung 830 128GB for $135 from BuyDig a few days ago. It was only a month ago that I got the Crucial M4 128GB for $145 shipped from J&R. Oh well.

Good news, prices just seem to keep getting lower. If you're in the U.S., I'd look forward to the Memorial day sales.

I get the impression that retailers are doing what they can to move M4 stock. Newegg just had a shellshocker for the M4 128GB for $99.

Whenever retailers are desperate to move inventory fast, they may have gotten the heads-up that a newer model is coming out.

My guess - the recent declines in M4 pricing suggest that there's something new coming. The 128GB version went from a pretty steady $170 all the way down to $99 over just a few months.

Even if Crucial releases M5 today, I wouldn't bother with it for least 6 months. Not worth the hassle of firmware upgrades and risk of loosing data, IMHO. Let someone else be the guinea pig! 🙂

Or they will have learned a thing or two and the initial release will be stable. It's not like they're starting from scratch with M5.

Unfortunately, that kind of logic doesn't seem to work with SSDs. Intel, known for their top reliability in G1 and G2 SSD drives, released G3 Series and then got plagued by 8MB bug. Just one example of many.

Sure, over the years, the overall trend of SSDs can go towards more stable and reliable drives, but so far no manufacturer has consistently demonstrated it, yet. So why be a guinea pig? Unlike, say CPUs, which gradually make decent steps forward in performance and features, SSD tech is much more rapidly changing.

From what I read the 8mb but was actually in the g1/g2 as well, but it almost never actually manifested itself in those drives.

m4's are so cheap currently that I wouldn't consider anything else, even samsung or intel. Supposedly there is a price war brewing, and samsung/intel are likely to jump into the fray sooner or later.

Yea but even if they learn it's a good idea to wait in case launch problems arise. I for one will not trust my OS to a launch drive. Even with weekly back ups.
